Gripping story, great writing, though with a relatively predictable end. Regardless, this is a great book for a vacation. Fast read.

Cass Leary is a lawyer who left her home town for the big city Chicago to earn more money, up scale living and up scale clients. Cass was almost dumped into Lake Michigan because her big wig clients felt she knew much about their business and might tell after the Feds approached her. She was saved and went back to her small home town where everyone knows your business and does not like Classes family because they are considered poor living on the east side. Cass came back to family drama, town drama and a murdered favorite high school coach. She was selected to defend a nineteen year old girl who has been accused of the murder. The book has drama on top of drama with a good ending. I will be reading the second book in this series.

prefer a love affair to family discord
The ending is a surprise but not fakery. It’s well drawn. But for me, the secessional juxtaposition of family problems with the crime drama lost my focus to “Who Done It”. And why.

great start
Cass Leary - smart, brave and audacious. She’s fearless and caring at the same time. If only she didn’t spoil Matty too much…

A Super Story
This is a new author to me and one I'll definitely be sticking with. I really enjoyed this. I liked Cass a lot and can't wait to read more of this series. Strange, though, as this one runs to over 500 pages yet the remaining stories are all 200 fewer pages for some reason. I thought I had the killer in this one guessed right and as usual I was wrong....there are quite a lot of characters throughout to contend with and many could've been the "baddie."It makes a change too to read a series based more around the legal side of things as opposed to the policing point of view. Usually when this occurs the whole story is based in the courtroom but this one isn't. Cass' back story is an intriguing one and no doubt we'll get to learn more about her days in Chicago at some point. I did wonder what on earth she'd done with a decade of earning a top-drawer salary, though....I liked the way she worked with Miranda and Jeanie. She seems to gravitate to these older ladies and I like the respect she accords them as well. Her family dynamics are pretty intriguing and they're none of them perfect which makes them more real.A couple of times I was a bit annoyed that she didn't inform us as to a character's age. We didn't know how old the murder victim was till we were at least halfway done and it was driving me nuts !! Then the suspect's brother was featured and from the way he behaved, etc. I assumed he was maybe 12 years old, but it turned out he was 17 !! Probably a minor annoyance to most people but I like to picture these people in my head and it's impossible to do when you've not been given sufficient material to work with. I did notice one sort of continuity mistake......she was on the phone with Jeanie when an accident happened, yet it was left to a passing good Samaritan to report it.....then in one passage Aubrey gave a statement verbally and then wrote it out but further in did it the other way round !You'll not enjoy this if bad language offends you but these characters speak how real people speak and that always works for me. I had to look up what witsec meant (and think it needed to be one of those annoying American acronyms so capitalised) and HIPPA/ADA as well aren't "things" here so I had to look them up, too.....She lost a couple of commas, a fullstop and misplaced just one apostrophe that I spotted so that was very good-going. She needed to capitalise Uber, too. Oh, and she used the word purple too much....it sounds a funny observation but I only noticed because it WAS overused.I really liked the ending scene, too......very well done.

Glad I stuck with it.
I had a little difficulty getting into this story at first, but I was really glad I perservered. The story and characters gradually developed and came together to make a good, entertaining read. I'm looking forward to continue reading all the Cass Leary books in the series.

Another series to follow
Always happy to find another legal series to follow. This was a really good read - hard to out down.Having practised for 40+ years, I was a bit disappointed in the trial. Defence counsel should at least be offering an alternative to their client. They didn't acquit based on reasonable doubt, but based on emotion.Aside from that, looking forward to reading the rest of the series.

Good pacing, keeps you guessing and quite entertaining
It is quite well written, a bit of intrique, a bit of mystery. There are obvious gaps in the back stories and a bit more could be done about the glaring lack of questioning in court about evidence, etc. Maybe that was a short cut to writing about a trial. In the end, it still makes you want to pick up the next book in the series.
