Great companion for the RAT 1 that has been my daily carry for years. A good quality knife for someone who is not chasing the latest and greatest in knife steels. Great ergonomics, comfortable in the hand, holds a decent edge and sharpens easily. Blade shape has been great for all the tasks that I have put it to from food prep to on the job use.

I've heard many good things about the Ontario RAT and RAT II knives over the years, and the reviews were very favorable, so I decided I'd get one to add to my collection. This is probably the cheapest knife I have in my collection, but the quality is still really good for a sub $30 knife. I was impressed by how smooth the blade deployment was considering this knife has no assist in it. In fact, it opens up just as smoothly as my assisted Kershaw Blur. I really wanted a good quality knife that didn't break the bank and was perfect for those occasions where you might not want to have a high value knife on you, especially if there is a chance it might get lost. Plus, this knife is pretty light weight at 2.7 oz. The closest knife I have to this weight is my Spyderco Cat G-10, which weights 2.5 ounces, but is also shorter and wider where the RAT II is longer and skinnier. Some people say that the handle has too much of a plastic feel and isn't grippy enough, but I'd have to disagree. Yes, the handle is not G-10 and it's not as grippy as G-10, but it doesn't feel like smooth plastic either. It has some grip to it; not much, but it's adequate. The blade came pretty sharp too. There's only a couple of minor knocks I have for this knife. First, the satin finish on the blade is a magnet for finger prints and oils, so you may find yourself wiping it down a good bit. Second, the pocket clip was so tight that I couldn't even get it to latch on to the pocket on my cargo pants. I haven't tried it on regular denim jeans yet, but I'm hoping it will fit better on those. If we're going solely on a "good, better, best" scale here, I'd put this knife in the good category, mostly due to the AUS-8 steel. The fit and finish is good and I love how light weight it feels. This was a great buy at $27 and I'm amazed you can get this much quality for that price. If I lost this knife, I could easily get another one without breaking the bank. If you are on a budget for a good knife or you just want to have a backup to keep in the car or something, I'd highly recommend this knife.

I'll start by saying I'm kind of a "knife nerd". I have a fairly large collection, with my interest being mainly in custom knives. But I'm pretty abusive to my work knife and can't get myself to use an expensive blade for metal on metal cutting, prying, other things knives aren't designed to do, not to mention I occasionally lose them. Enter the Rat II. It's a great knife at a great price point. The one handed opening action is excellent out of the box. The scales have a great textured secure grip. The smaller size is plenty big for everything I throw at it but doesn't freak people out when I flick it open. And it's easy to sharpen and easily takes a good working edge with the Worksharp pocket sharpener I keep in my toolbox. In fact, I'm writing this review of my second Rat II as I lost my original one that I had been carrying for a long time. As soon as I realized it wasn't in my pocket I ordered a replacement as, for me, this is the perfect work blade. The only MINOR gripe I have is that it comes with the pocket clip set for tip down carry. It's reversible as long as you have a T6 mini torx bit and simple enough to change, I just don't know many people that prefer that carry style. I highly recommend this affordable little knife.

The knife came sharp enough to shave the back of my hand. The packaging was simple to get into. I used it to open a plastic clamshell of something else that arrived that day, to slice some food and to open mail. It was still utility sharp after those activities, but not sharp enough to shave the back of my hand. I was able to sharpen it to shaving sharp with a Spyderco Sharpmaker in about a minute. Comparing it to my other EDC knives, it was almost as easy to deploy as my assisted opening Kershaw Leeks. I was very impressed. It was easier to open than my Spyderco Delica. Unfortunately, it was much more difficult to close than any of my other knives. The liner lock is very, very stiff, with 2 points of resistance, the initial point, and then another point about 1/3 of the way closed. I have a callous on my thumb and it actually tore the callous closing it. Because of that, It is going to sit on a shelf for a while until my thumb heals. Maybe it will become easier to close after it is broken in. My impressions are still very favorable for a < $30 knife. It looks like it deserves the reputation as a budget EDC that you see on the knife websites and forums. June 2017 update. I am carrying this more than my two Kershaw Leeks and my Spyderco Delica.. It is almost as easy to open as the Leeks which are assisted opening knives. It sharpens easier than any of the others and I believe holds an edge just as well. I have used it to cut cardboard and small branches Including some,light chopping. It is still as tight as the day I bought it

I wasnt expecting too much when I first bought this knife. I have heard that many people enjoy the Ontario RAT knives, but I tend to want slightly smaller knives due to a combination of different things, including having smaller hands than most, and I also prefer having a very light knife that you just forget about in your pocket. I must say, I am thoroughly impressed by this knife. For about $26USD, you get a knife that I would gladly pay 2x or maybe 3x for. This blade is made in Taiwan, NOT CHINA, there is a world of difference between China and Taiwan. For Chinese blades, you can expect poor QC or bad craftsmanship due to the low skill workers they tend to employ. On the other hand, Taiwan has a much more skilled workforce, and has proper QC (if you want more proof, Taiwanese Spydercos are some of their best, and you might recognize a couple high quality Taiwanese tech companies like HTC and ASUS). Steel: AUS8, good solid quality Japanese steel, the treatment of the steel seems more than good, holds a very nice edge for quite a while. Handle: Nylon Scales, not bad, provides more than enough grip for everyday chores, the shape of the handle is very nice and ergonomic, a comfortable knife to hold for someone with small hands. Lock: Liner lock, its as solid as a standard liner lock can be. Easy to actuate, and is out of the way, so it will be hard to accidentally disengage. Opening: non-assisted ambi thumb studs. The action of the knife is surprisingly smooth. It takes a couple minutes to learn how to open a non-assisted thumb stud knife, once you learn it, it will fly open just as fast and smooth as an assisted knife. The only thing I have to somewhat complain about is the blade shape. The blade curves upward very quickly when it gets near the tip, giving it a nice belly, but I personally prefer blades with only a slight belly. Im more of a fan of wharncliffe style or other flatter blade shapes due to the fact that I prefer having a fine tip on my blades. That is more of a personal complaint, and does not have anything to do with how good the actual knife performs. Another note, apparently, Randal, the designer of this knife cut all ties with Ontario Knife Company and is working with other companies now (he recently worked with ESEE on a knife with his name on it), so Ontario is likely going to no longer print the RAT logo on the blades for future batches, and they are changing the name to the "Model II" instead of the "RAT II". If you are looking for a small EDC of about 3" and you dont want to spend an extravagant amount, and you dont care about bells and whistles, then the RAT II is what you are looking for. It is simple, reliable, and very good quality. You really cant beat the value of this being $26USD. A sidenote, what I would like to see, is a slightly less pronounced belly, pull back the start of the belly a bit to get a finer tip, then make the blade out of S30V, polish that blade to a mirror finish, skeletonize the liners and possibly use titanium instead of steel, then put some G10 or micarta scales on that baby, you would have yourself one hell of a winner for a higher-end EDC.

I'm not a knife enthusiast by any means, and I've been using my old Schrade SW-7 for decades with no issues as a EDC or utility knife, fishing knife, camping knife and all. I decided its time to get a new EDC and see what was on the market and so I found this knife rated very highly on many different forums, the reviews on Amazon as well as other websites recommending this knife. I have to say I am extremely pleased with it after I received it. The factory blade was pretty sharp, not as sharp as they come but definitely not dull either. I could slightly shave hairs off my forearm with it but not in 1 swipe like my larger SOG sealpup, where this took a few motions to completely shave the hair off. The knife also cuts paper very easily and without any problem at all. So overall a very sharp knife, and especially for the price. The knife doesn't feel cheap at all, and from the blade to the lock, to the grip it feels very solidly built. The blade is centered when closed, easily flicks open effortlessly with a flick of the stud, and rivals the speed of an assisted opening knife I recently purchased. What I really like about this knife is how it feels in my hand, and how light but durable it feels and the grip is good, but not like my g-10 knife which is like rough sandpaper, this is a subtle grip thats good but not hard to pull from the pocket either. The clip is firm, there is no play in the blade and overall now my new favorite EDC knife. Perfect for pretty much all the daily tasks of opening, cutting or whatever. I don't work in a construction type or blue collar trade, so I don't know how this knife would hold up in that type of use, so I can't comment on that, but overall very happy with my purchase and I highly recommend this knife for others. I may even be getting some of these as gifts for people as its affordable but still very good quality.

I just came back form a 9 hour workday (landscaping) and this knife made my day! I've had it for about a month now and its been doing excellent. - The grips are plastic but they are very nice and provide the perfect amount of traction for myself (others will complain not enough, but its good for me and it won't wear out your pockets so fast). -The blade is what I have been really pleased with though. I have been cutting and placing sod all day using this knife and its still got a decent edge (paper cutting). It came edge sharp enough for a rough shave (barely) by the way. - The centering is perfect for the blade as well as the ergonomics for myself. -The pocket clip does it job and it can be positioned on 4 places on the knife. You will need a small torx bit in order to do that though. Also the paint has chipped around the edge a little, but I'm just fine with that since that is what I expected If your looking for a fair priced knife with a linear lock 3 inch blade that will do good outdoor/utility work this is it. No, Its not made in the U.S., but the Taiwanese workers( good allies to the U.S. btw) did an excellent job as did the designer. ITs just right for edc. -further note: if your cutting sod I would use a utility knife with disposable blades, but this did the trick and lasted well. By the way I used to carry a Swiss army knife and I had a love/hate relationship with it. It was so practical, yet not pretty and didn't have a pocket clip. I switched to this since I've heard so much about the Rat 1 and I lost the SAK. I still miss it sometimes, but when I need a screwdriver I usually go find one (yes I've used this knife for flatheads on occasion, it is not recommended, not to say it doesn't work but I screwdriver is easier), and when I need a knife for utility or improvising due to lack of some other tool, this knife is comfortably in my pocket ready to be used and abused within reason.

I received this knife a few days ago. I have been on the fence about getting this knife for awhile because my Ka Bar Dozier has served me faithfully and well. After reading more reviews for this knife and watching some Youtube videos on it, I decided to bit the bullet and order it. All I can say is that I wish I had ordered it sooner. You get every bang for your buck with this knife and more. The handle scales feel great and aren't too rough so they still provide you some grip. I also really like the groove for your index finger to sit in while you have your thumb on the jimping at the base of the knife's spine. It just feels very secure and very safe, but allows you to choke up on the knife for more serious cutting tasks. The blade came wicked sharp right out of the box, and it is AUS 8 steel, so it should hold and take an edge pretty well. The action on the blade is absolutely phenomenal. I had to go back and read the description to make sure it wasn't spring assisted. With a flick of your thumb the knife flies out and locks up, so it is ready to go. I didn't have to tweak the pivot screw at all and there is no concern about the blade coming out while it's in your pocket. There are thumb studs on both sides and the pocket clip can be switched to left/right and tip up/down carry. The knife doesn't have any blade play. It feels a little heavy but it's honestly not a problem and the heft just feels good in your hand. Time will tell how it holds up and if something major happens I will do an updated review, but for now I have zero complaints. So if your like me and your'e on the fence about buying this knife, just pull the trigger because it's one of the best knives you'll get for under $30.

Es una navaja para edc increíble, ninguna pega a los materiales, aunque esta hecha en Taiwan, viene perfectamente ajustada, hoja centrada, ninguna holgura, es muy cómoda en la mano, se despliega a una sola mano sin problema, y el clip se puede poner en las 4 posiciones, ósea perfecta para zurdos y diestros, ojo que viene muy afilada, la forma de la hoja y el vaciado recto la hacen perfecta para perlar manzanas o preparar el almuerzo, una grandísima compra por un precio razonable, sin duda la recomendaría a los no iniciados, los que estamos metidos algo en el mundillo sabemos que es una imprescindible.

Eu sempre quis esse canivete, comprei por um preço bom, comparado ao que estão pedindo aqui no Brasil. Ele abre muito suavemente, tem o tamanho ideal para porte. Eu comprei em aus 8, muito bom, não oxida facilmente como o D2. Lembrando que esse é o RAT 2, ou seja, menor que o RAT 1.

Simple to sharpen, keep sharp, fits well in hand, works well. Small, light, and quite strong and robust.

Esse canivete é indestrutível. Fácil de afiar e a ação é super rápida e suave. Recomendo.
