Got at a discount from Amazon warehouse deals. As usual, there were no problems and the unit had clearly not be used. As for smell, I washed the unit in soap and water, ran it through a test run, washed it again and repeated the test run. The smell started off fairly strong, but now I can detect little or no odour. There was no impact on the food I prepared. Made fries and roasted potatoes (about 2cm to 3 cm across). Absolutely fantastic. Crispy on outside and soft on inside. Used very little oil. My taste buds and my heart are happy! Very easy to use and clean. I am skeptical of most new kitchen appliances, but this is a great purchase.

I've had a T-Fal unit for years and decided it was finally time to upgrade. I had a friend who had this unit and swore by it so I thought I'd give it a try. I was pleasantly surprised with some key differences: - precise temperature and timer settings (my old ones just had 2 mechanical knobs) - super easy to clean - large basket - very even heat, large pieces of food gets evenly browned - heats up quickly Some things I don't love: - the display never turns off, it will display OFF unless you leave the basket slightly out - as others have said, it smells really bad when new and takes a few uses before the smell goes away. I even heated it up a few times with no food in it for it to off-gas.. I recommend putting it outdoors and letting it run a few half hour cycles to get rid of the smell - lots of audible beeping, i means lots.. it beeps when you turn it on, beeps when it gets to temp, beeps when the timer runs down, beeps again to remind you there's food in the basket
