Ergodyne Skullerz 8975 Class C Safety Helmet, White

Helmet came brand-new, is adjustable in size, and provides ample protection for the nature of my job. It even saved me from a falling object a couple of times. It’s also comfortable to wear, as long as you adjust it to your head size. You won’t even notice the weight throughout the day, as it’s light on your head. For its price-point, it’s a very good purchase, and I highly recommend it for anyone that works in the construction sector.

This hard hat is comfortable and has a space like the old hardhats that you could put a warm hat in between the suspension and the hardhat.

I didn't know what a truly awesome hard hat was until I got this. Honestly, the amount of features included is something I hadn't really known was a thing with hard hats. Not only do they have their own cool accessory slots in the front and back (e.g., the light), but they also have what I now know are standard accessory slots on the sides (my ear protection fits in there). I really wish the visor came with this yet, because this is already expensive and an extra 50% for the visor seems pretty crazy. But that looks super convenient, and I'm wondering how well that integrates with the light attached. The vents are great. Really cool that you can close them. I hadn't realized how much of a difference they can make. Also, the harness seems infinitely adjustable, not to mention washable, and the chin strap can even be removed. Unfortunately, hard hats and bicycle helmets alike never look very good on me, even though I can see that I like the style of this one. Not sure why that it, but I think it has something to do with my big head, like they always sit up too high, even with the adjustable depth suspension. Regardless, I don't think hard hats get better than this. OH! I just remembered the one thing I don't like. The light is cool and can be used on its own and it really quite versatile. BUT, it uses AAA batteries. Oh God, why? This should have been a rechargeable battery pack that can be swapped out in the field AND recharged either in the light or outside the light via USB. For the price, they could have made this happen. I hate using disposable batteries.

Excellent hard hat. The fit and finish is just superb. The included clip-on light is at least as good as my pricier camping headlamps and the clip is very secure with no chance of it coming loose. 6 point suspension and I have to say it has the best ratchet I’ve ever used, besides being comfortable. The suspension itself may be worth the price of the hard hat. Finally, it’s vented, heat being the one thing that keeps me from wearing a hard hat anywhere I don’t have to. All good? Well, no. There are just a couple of things I don’t like. First, the crown pad is thin and crappy and it slides down the suspension straps every time I take the hard hat off. Second, and this is a bigger deal, the chin strap is a pain in the butt. No matter how I adjusted it, and it’s pretty hard to adjust, it still hits some part of my ears. It’s also pretty hard to remove. My hat arrived with one of the straps twisted. Fixing that was difficult because the strap attachment clips, at least on mine, are REALLY hard to get out of the slots. While I suppose that’s a Good Thing if you always leave the chin strap on, it’s not if you like to be able to take it off as needed. I would only use one in a place like a low attic or crawl space, but I will be leaving this one off permanently. Aside from the the chin strap, this is a superior hard hat in most respects. Pricy, but you get what you pay for. Definitely recommended.

For my job I sometimes have to visit construction sites and when I do I need to be wearing appropriate PPE. I also try to keep an eye out on PPE that other folks that work for my employer may benefit from in their day to day activities. This popped up as a vine item and there were several things that made it look interesting; included headlamp, ventilation, and the ability to purchase drop down eye protection. Build quality of this safety helmet is top notch. The material that the shell is made out of isn't the typical softer plastic found in less expensive safety helmets. It is very rigid and does not flex very much. The helmet is light weight and I would not have a problem wearing this all day (if not for a different fit issue I'll detail later). The suspension harness is also very well made and it snaps into its retaining points very affirmatively. Headlamp: The headlamp works well. It snaps into place easily and operates on easy to find AAA batteries. The power button has 2 operating settings. The first turns on a center spot beam. The second turns the spot off and 2 side led's on that are more of a flood pattern. You can't use all 3 together. It puts out a decent amount of light (150 lumens in spot and 50 lumens in flood). It's nothing special but not bad at all for a $25 headlamp. Suspension: The suspension halo is built well. All of the parts are replaceable and, per the manual the suspension and chin strap should be replaced after no more than 12 months of use (with the whole helmet being replaced after 2 years of use or 5 years from date of manufacture). The suspension has different fitness settings on both front and rear to fine tune the fitting and how high or low the helmet sits on your head. I spent hours trying every available combination and was not quite able to get a comfortable fit for my head. BUT, I have a large head. I wear between a 7 3/4 and an 8 depending on the maker. Regardless of the setting I used the 2 back suspension halo attachment points pressed into the back of my skull. My suspicion is that if you have a smaller head this would likely not be an issue. Chinstrap: The 2 photos I included are of how the chinstrap came installed and how I was able to make it fit. The chinstrap comes with the webbing crossed across the back of the wearer's head. In that configuration the chinstrap is not long enough to go around my chin. I reconfigured and was able to make it fit. I contacted Ergodyne's customer service and explained the issue I was having and they verified that the webbing is designed to cross behind the wearer's head. ***Do not reconfigure as I've shown in this picture because this is not how this chinstrap was designed to operate.*** Ergodyne customer service did state that they had received feedback about the chinstraps not fitting and are working on longer chinstraps. Visor: I did not try a model with the incorporated eye protection visor but I am very attracted to this feature. I wear glasses and having the ability to drop down eye protection is very appealing. Safety glasses, even those supposedly designed to fit over other glasses, never seem to fit comfortably. Having eye protection built in is a great feature. Ventilation: The vents on this helmet are easy to operate even with gloves on. I can't speak to how effective they are in heat since it is December but they have to provide better venting than the standard safety helmet which has none. Conclusion: I did not take away too many points for comfort because I know that my head is bigger than average. I think this is a very well built safety device. If your head is more on the average size I'd say this is safety helmet offers some nice features and exceptional build quality. Be aware that if you have a bigger head you may have difficulty with suspension comfort, chin strap, or both.
