I can't get staples to come out. Anyone else have this problem and if so did you get it to work and how?

Get some more staples. The staples are sometimes at fault.

Is the power adjustment really effective? Make any difference on how deep the staple can go?

I bought this to be able to tack my skirting back on couch after puppy ripped it down 🤦🏼♀️ I have yet to use it, I'm sorry
