It says it is 1 to 4 players but cant get it to be 2 players. How do I do that?

Well...you actually need 2 switches and 2 separate game cartridges to play 2 players. Hence my terrible review when I bought it.

Can a six year old understand and play this game?

The mini games are fairly easy and simple enough that they shouldn't have a problem understanding. I'd probably sit with the him/her and show them how to do it. If your using motion controls be sure and show them that they need to have have the wrist wrap on so the controller does get thrown.
