What kind of USB cable can you use with this charger?

The socket takes the standard, flat, "large" USB plug. Not 'micro' or 'mini'.

Has anyone used this for the kindle? Amazon sells their power adapter for $20 so this seems like a cheaper option.

What is the difference between 1A and 2A?

1A basically means a flow of one coulomb per second, 2A means a flow of 2 coulombs per second. Coulombs are a measure of charge. 1A ports are fine for mobile phones, but aren't suitable for tablets. To ensure you can charge a range of devices, it's best to go with 2A ports at minimum. It is perfectly safe to plug a device that draws 1A into the 2A port and vice versa. I hope this helps.
