Does this pair successfully to macbooks? i need a device i can switch between a windows and macos machine.

It should, I purchased it for my google Chromebook and it works perfectly well. The connection requires a standard Bluetooth 4.0 or higher. So it technically should work on any device as it does not require any driver installation. However, I don't own any Apple devices so I did not test it. Can you use this to type alt codes for special characters - eg curly quotes (alt+0147/0148), en dash (alt+0150), em dash (alt+0151) in Word & Notepad?

no you can't unless you're using a separate keyboard with it. there is no "alt" key.

Can you programme other functionalities to the keys? (As I am an artist I need often letters to toggle tools)
