Discovering Statistics Using IBM SPSS Statistics

This is a great book! The author does a wonderful job of taking complicated matter and simplifying it. This is really appreciated while crawling through the depths of dissertation hell.

I had to buy this book for a class. I think that it is well written and the examples make the concepts easy to understand.

If you have to take Stats, this is the author/textbook you want to learn from! Hilarious and practical - it makes learning statistics actually...enjoyable? :)

Field does a good job of using engaging material to keep a subject that can often be dry, somewhat interesting. He also has an interesting sense of humor which some of my classmates found offensive. I personally enjoyed his sense of humor. I don't know why academia always has to be so stodgy. There's really no reason for it.Field goes into a tremendous amount of depth on everything he covers but one thing I found frustrating was that if I was looking for a particular answer to something, I had to wade through endless chattering in order to find the proverbial needle in a haystack that I was looking for. The sidebars are often helpful but I wish he had more of them. I also wish, with regards to equations, that he would just show a succinct step 1 do this, step 2 do this, step 3 do this, without including a dissertation for every step. The appendix could also use some more work. Finally, it would be nice to have a portion of the book that concisely covers certain critical things in ONE place, instead of a few trillion places all of the book. A summary of r, r squared etc. (and all the major points you'd want to know about it) in one spot would be nice instead of having to flip all over the place.I looked for other books to supplement this one but I couldn't really find any. I'll definitely be keeping it around for future reference.

I bought this since it was cheaper than the NA version, but virtually the same book. I can’t say that I have found it very useful for actually understanding Statistics or SPSS, but when Andy Field actually does break down a problem for topics like Regression, it actually prepared me very well for my Ivy League Masters program. Most of my cohort feels like it’s hard to actually learn Stats from this book, and I have not really had to practice with the SPSS tutorials given in the book since my professor gives us video chat tutorials anyway. It would be nice if this book came with videos, but there are screenshots that might be helpful to some.I was told that the first version might have more thorough explanations, and there are some distracting tangents that happen from Andy’s sense of humor, but overall you will benefit from this book purchase. You may need extra tutoring if you are not familiar with Stats in general, though.

I came to dread all the asides, that as many reviewers pointed out are not actually helpful in any way and just add length to a very long book. Not great for teaching, as indicated by my students.

I wanted to like this book, really, but there is just so much unnecessary information. I understand that he’s trying to make it funny and entertaining, but it’s unnecessary and not helpful in learning statistics. I’ve gotten to the point where I just watch YouTube videos instead of trying to read this horrible book. It’s too heavy and way too long and makes things far more complicated than they need to be.

This book safe my dissertation. I always panic when I have to do statistics and this book calmed me down and leade step by step. Would recommend if you have hard time with SPSS

Sorry dude, i know statistics are hard and i appreciate you trying to make it a bit more fun but i feel it went too far and i often find myself lost as a result
