Real Adventures of Jonny Quest: The Complete Second Season

I love watching animated TV shows from early 00s back to old Looney Tunes and such. The original Jonny Quest is one of my favorite animated shows all time, and I had memories of The Real Adventures of Jonny Quest, but I really don't know that I had seen an episode of it since the 90s. The intro is pretty cool and it really triggered some memories from when I was really young(born in 1991 so memories prior to turning 10). As far as the show goes, I started with this "complete second season" because it is supposed to be more similar to the original than the first season with less "questworld". The original Jonny Quest in my opinion is way better in many regards and feels much more authentic. This season of the real adventures of Jonny Quest makes Jonny seem like a super hero and feels much less authentic and "real". Where the original Jonny Quest had average humans(so to speak Bannon is skilled body guard and Dr. Quest is renowned scientist) being in situations and environments that felt believable and realistic for what real people of their standing would be in, the real adventures of Jonny Quest they all seem like super heros with abilities outside what is realistic(Bannon should be a capable body guard who can physically hold his own against opponents, but even he seems overpowered and outside the expectations of what a real human should be capable of). They all seem to have plot armor as well to the extent that they are put in so many outrageously life threatening situations that you never really get a sense of them actually being in danger. That being said from an entertainment standpoint which is arguably more important the real adventures of Jonny Quest has that with good action, nicely done animation, and interesting(although overly exaggerated) stories. Honestly, though, I really don't let myself associate the original with this because if I do, I just can't see the any of the characters(especially Jonny) becoming what we see in this reboot. As far as Questworld stuff goes, I don't like it but I am ok with it when I let myself view it as separate from the original. The CGI animation is pretty bad, but because it is virtual reality/computer world, it actually looks fitting and doesn't bother me unlike the animation in Transformers Beast Wars where it is hard to watch. Ultimately, its a really good show that is just very different from the original and if you view it as such, you should enjoy it. The fact that this one slipped into the back of my memory files though made this one really take me back when I started watching it.

I should probably recuse myself from a review since I worked on this version of the series as a writer and artist....but I thought you'd like some background. Good News: The Real Adventures series was greenlit in the 90's. Bad News: The series was assigned to a writer and art director who openly disliked the original, classic series...and had a desire to 'fix it'. I categorically disagree. The classic early 60's JQ is not only a wonderful show, but, in fact, perhaps the greatest animated adventure show EVER (see my comments on the DVD release of the original for more "Adventures in Animation"). But, those Season One guys are entitled to their puzzling opinion. Anyway, Season One was a disaster on many fronts which I can't get into here and that 'creative' team was booted from the studio half way through production. (this is public, verifiable knowledge) The two previously released 'Season One Real Adventures' speak for themselves better than I ever could about their work. Let's say...I'm NOT a fan....and Original series fans were turned off by the reboot. (your milage may differ). There were some very talented people on that crew, but without a proper leadership, those talents were wasted. IN MY OPINION. So, enter the Season Two Team, lead by Producers Davis Doi, Larry Houston, Story Editor/Head Writer Glenn Leopold...and humbly, myself as top staff writer and sometimes model designer. It was a bit of a mess to clean up, but we rolled up our sleeves and dove in. Though we were saddled with elements meant to match Season One (Questworld, Maine location, Jessie, etc.), we retooled the character designs and definitely conformed the writing and premise to the classic show. We even recast the voices to get them closer to the Classic. (I confess learning to love the Jessie character as I got to work with her). This set is a result of that. I stand by this Second Season as only a little compromised by circumstances, and still very entertaining. It is second in JQ quality only to the original show from 1963. I think it would have done a lot better in the ratings if the well weren't poisoned by the Season One shows which turned away many viewers before they had a chance to see these. Technically, these transfers are decent, so you have the episodes. There are no menus to speak of and no extras (and I would have LOVED to do commentaries on the nine episodes I wrote!). Also, the cover art is Season One style. The shows within look much better than the cover would make you believe. I'm just glad that these good ones can see the light of day and get into your hands. We tried to keep the VR Questworld stuff to a minimum....often shortening the episode to stick a stand-alone Questworld CGI sequence at the back to keep it out of the body of the episode. Cutting edge at the time, the CGI hasn't aged well, but there isn't much of it. I look forward to seeing the comments as people purchase this series. and a PS....let it go about Jessie's pink outfit. We didn't like it either and changed it after a few episodes. Be grateful that the show is on finally on premise and the stories don't suck.....that's more important.

I loved watching reruns of Jonny Quest when I was a kid and seeing his crazy adventures with his father Dr. Benton Quest, his best friend Hadji, his dog Bandit, their bodyguard Race Bannon and occasionally Race's daughter Jessie. It had the right amount of action, adventure, and violence that excited me just like the Jeff years of Lassie before parents' groups advocated to tone down the violence which contributed to cartoons being the watered down parodies they are today. I remember this show when it first aired on Cartoon Network and was excited Jonny Quest was coming back and the characters would be teenagers now instead of the preteens they were in the previous adaptions in the 60s and 80s. The first season was not the greatest but the second season was better, returned to its roots, and felt like Johnny Quest. Even though the show wisely did not focus on romance, my favorite episode is probably when Jonny and Jessie are possessed by the ghosts of lovers who look like older versions of themselves when they get caught in a strange fog while sailing and their ship is marooned on a haunted island and they have to kiss for the first time to break the curse and time loop. Season Two was awesome. The intro was awesome. The characters, the villians, the actions, and they told so many great stories. It also had a good mix of 3D and 2D animation which was cool at the time but I preferred the 2D Animation when they were in the real world not virtual reality. I wished the show could have gone on but it left off on a great note with the adventure never ending with them. Just our glimpse into their lives and getting to go on daring adventures with them from the comfort of our homes. If you're a Jonny Quest fan, this is a great addition to add to your collection.

I’ve loved this series since I first saw it aired back in the 90s. I’ve had season one part 1 on DVD for years and I finally thought of adding season two to my collection. Actually I really loved season two more. The action the Adventures, and the fantastic voice cast. Including guests like Mark Hammil, Frank Welker, Micheal Bell, and many others too many to remember at this time. I remember seeing the original series years ago being aired in repeats on various networks and I have to say I was skeptical about a new remake, but after seeing this new series I honestly loved it more than the original from the 60s I believe. I only have one problem with this remake. I wished it had lasted longer than two seasons. Ah but that’s what’s so great about good shows that end too quickly. They leave you craving more. I highly recommend this series to anyone who is craving an amazing action animated show. The Real Adventures Of Johnny Quest won’t disappoint you.

Everything was perfect exceeded my expect

This season returned the show back to original beginning. The characters had grown up well in this last and final season. Really liked that unlike the first season, Dr. Quest acknowledged Hadji was his adopted son. Focusing more of the young people than the adults as it did in the original series, it showcased the skills they'd learned over the years and their abilities to solve problems. Only concern here is that is no consistency in story line from the original series, the movies or the two seasons of the Real Adventures of Jonny Quest. Jessie had two different mothers, Jade and Estella. Race Bannon was featured a bit more than Dr. Quest. Not sure why that decision was made, plus the writers seemed to forget that Dr. Quest also had a background in medicine plus other sciences. Jonny never seemed to have any questions about his mother or ask for stories from his father. She's never mentioned. If there had been a third season, perhaps that would have happened with their return to the Florida Complex. All in all, love the entire series from the original to the films to the Real Adventures. Unique cartoon and highly recommended.

JQ was the original adventure cartoon where people were actually in life and death situations. It was a truly wonderful and spellbinding adventure as a kid and I have enjoyed watching the series reinvented with this latest fare. Not quite as good as the original but it still has lots of action and great stories. It was also the first to feature 3-D animation. It was crude but, regardless, as with the original series, it broke new ground in animation. If you want a more radical reinvention, see "The Venture Brothers". An absolutely hilarious modern riff on JQ.

DVD works well and looks good. Brings back childhood memories.

Great retro series

This 2nd season Warner Classic release DVD is just the bomb! It's not like the first season DVD, where it looks more like a VHS rip and doesn't upscale on my 4K TV. This edition is the real deal! High quality video version as well as the prints on the 4 discs themselves. Not to mention that this show's still as entertaining as ever!

About time that Hanna Barbara released the second season of this show. I Have been waiting a long time for it. The second season of Real Adv. of JQ is very entertaining. Quite different than the first season because they made many changes. It doesn't mean season 2 is better that season 1, it's just different. You will enjoy this set ! The only complaint I have is the drawing on the cover of this set. To me it's amateurish and not a true reflection of the contents inside. Jonny Quest is kid-friendly with intelligence. Something you can't say about a lot of shows aimed at children these days....

Son loved his birthday treat

I love that the quality of the video is restored to it's original glory, and my son loves this show back when he saw it on TV. The only thing is that we wished that it had Closed-Captions so that we can understand what the characters were talking about.
