Works great! Or not. - update: still working!
I have eight (yes, I am a sucker for unwanted pets) dogs. I did not do the "training" as explained in the packaging. They suggested placing your pet on the mat, letting the alarm go off, and shooing them off with a firm "no." I believe that THE DOGS should get THEMSELVES into the situation, not be forced into it and then punished for it. So, I waited with water pistol in hand for them to jump up on their own. First to try was the "devil dog." My smartest and most devious dog. He thought the noise was cool and a great new toy. I sprayed him with water, said "no" and he left it alone. A day later he tried again, and I chased him off. He has not tried a third time. But, it is still early. I suspect this mat will not be an effective deterent for him. On the other end of the spectrum, my Aussie jumped on it, the alarm went off, and she not only immediately jumped off without being told, she was so spooked she ran out the doggie door and into the back yard. Didn't want to come back in the room. Three others jumped on the mat and quickly got off on their own. The fourth hasn't even tried it yet. I think she witnessed the other dogs and the noise and is too scared to go near the couch. (The littlest dog can't jump up that far, so he is exempt.) The verdict? So far, after four days, it works like a charm with all but one of my dogs. Will it work with yours? Chances are good, but if you have a "devil dog" like I do, it may not be effective. UPDATE: I have had this for about a year now. After the first few days the puppies all learned to stay off the couch. Now, even if I take the mate off, they don't try to sneak back on it. Works like a charm!

lasted 2 minutes
It's narrow; the length is okay but it's narrow so you really would need two to cover the width of a couch. Furthermore, the sensor is not that sensitive so you have to push it firmly in just the right spot to get a noise. My dog goes on the couch when I leave the house, so we tried this out the first day by leaving the house for 20 minutes to get frozen yogurt. When we came back, the dog had decided to destroy the item making a noise, and had chewed the plastic electronic bit to shreds and even chewed into the battery. You may say "well this is just a reflection of your poorly trained dog" and you may be right to an extent, but the purpose of the item was to help train the dog, only the noise is ineffective and the low quality plastic of this product allowed the dog too-easy access to the 9v battery i'm glad his mouth didn't get severely hurt by battery acid.

EXCELLENT purchase (depending on the dog)
Every dog/cat responds uniquely to specific stimuli, and while it doesn't surprise me that this wouldn't work for every pet, the two that we bought work WONDERS for us. My husky is very reactive to any sound resembling a smoke detector, so the beeping of these mats, while not THAT loud, definitely stops her in her tracks. Our 6-month old kitten is also deterred from the couches now as well. The sound is loud enough to bug us while we're sleeping, but it isn't so loud that I worry our attached neighbors will be bothered by it during the day. This is the perfect solution for the opportunistic couch-surfing dog who only jumps up when you're not looking. Don't buy the more expensive brand of these just because other reviews complain about it being too thin- it's fine. Just place it where your dog will have to put pressure on it in order to be on the couch and it will do its job. I will say though that if you know for a fact that your pet isn't phased by high pitched noises (just kill two birds by checking your smoke detectors and watch their response) you may be better off with a different type of training device.

Works but Dogs Found a Sneaky Way Around it
This mat does a good job at keeping my dogs off the couch—at least initially. It’s effective and sturdy, and the texture seems to discourage them from jumping up. However, my clever dogs quickly learned to go around it by using the steps nearby, so it’s not a foolproof solution. It’s a helpful tool if you want to deter dogs in a certain area, but it might not fully prevent determined pets from finding alternative routes.

Works for my dog!
My gold lab has a round dog bed on an indoor trampoline and two very comfortable floor beds in different rooms in the house but when we go out, she gets up on my burgandy colored sofa and drools and sheds! I purchased the dog furniture covers and they are unsightly, slip down even though I sewed plastic strips and put nails on the back of the sofa to keep them in place. I purchased two stay off mats because of the Amazon reviews stated they were small which they are. As soon as I placed the mats side by side on the sofa and tested them, my dog ran out of the living room. She did not like the high pitch sound. Now I don't even have to turn them on, just placing them on the sofa and she leaves the room. The mat is slippery so if you have a brave dog, it can be pulled off by the dog so I would suggest placing a sheet over the mat if your dog gets wise to the fact they can be pulled off. I gave it four stars because I do like it but my friend has a six month old puppy that was soiling her sofa so she purchased one. The puppy not only pulled it off of the sofa but enjoyed the high pitch sound and ended up playing with it. So it will work for some pets but not all which really isn't a defect on the mat but I want consumers to know that there is a possibility that it won't work for all pets.

Low cost solution to keep dogs off couch and out of bedroom!
This product works like a charm and is a low cost solution to keep my dogs out and off of "forbidden" zones. I bought three mats and used two (side by side) to block the double entry door to our master bedroom. I had to adjust the spacing a bit the first day because the dogs just stepped over the mats (they are not very wide). But once their paws hit a mat, they figured out that the mats should be avoided! After 48 hours, I was able to remove the second mat and they didn't even try to step over the one remaining. It is easy for us to step over, but we did step on them a few times at night because we forgot they were there. After a few days, we learned to look where we are walking. Go figure that it took us longer than the dogs to be trained!! In bare feet, I'm glad it is an audio alarm instead of electric shock! The third mat we placed on the sofa and I only heard it alarm once. No more dog hair or chewed pillows on that sofa! I plan to move the mats around as needed, but doubt I'll have to leave them on permanently. Great product!

Very small & annoying
I have this for the back of the couch and that is about how wide it is, but it only cover 2 cushions. If you wanted this to actually cover the seat cushion of a couch you would need about 4 of them. I also thought the noise was going to be a silent one that only animals could hear, but in fact it is a loud beep and it doesnt even bother my animals, just me. They just stay on it and listen to the beep.

Doesn't work as its intended purpose
I got this when our three month old kitten discovered he liked to be on the counter. The sound it makes is like a smoke detector, exactly like a smoke detector. The first time he stepped on it, he didn't like shutter and run...he just kind of looked around like wtf. These mats are so thin. If you're using them to cover a counter, you'll need two or three. And, if they're slightly bent, they go off. So no chance of having them cover a raised-to-flat surface. Basically these suck. I got a refund for one because it was defective as received. I gave the other to my mom because her elderly cat has starter sleeping on the printer...a smaller area that this would be good for. Overall, I just can't recommend this.

Great deterent for sofa loving dogs
We have two large dogs who destroyed 3 sofas in as many years. Using this spray off mat keeps the dogs off the sofas and on their own beds. Simple but very effective with excellent battery life. Easy to roll up when/if the King comes to tea

Not recommended
I purchased others before and they are better quality. They are small and they do not make a strong noise.

Waste of time and money
The product didn't work at all. The noise only activated when extremely heavy weight was placed on it (about 55 kilos). And then only for a moment. Far from deterring the dog she ended up sleeping on it. A waste of money.

I am disappointed in this product. It took a while to arrive and when it did, it didn’t work.
