These are tight fitting socks. Athletically, they feel like compression socks. If you prefer looser fitting socks, you will want to consider another type of sock.

what are the materials used? They mention briefly that they are cotton, but not on packaging. I'm suspicious.

They are made in China. They are NOT 80% cotton. I don’t think is any cotton in the synthetic manufacture. False advertising. Packaging/product labeling is required to list composition and no surprise - these do not. Avoid if you want a quality cotton product

I wear a women's size 8 ww. none of the posts mention the width of their foot! do they stretch enough (sideways) to put on comfortably?

Im a man but the way they are made makes them fit very snug. And will stretch to conform to your foot surprisingly well.
