Hello there. how many cds can you fit into each pigeon hole? do you have to slide them in both vertically and horizontally to fill each one? cheers

I have CDs vertically and each space takes 18 - 20. There is space to put another few on top horizontally if really pushed for space. If you store them horizontally takes the same number with space for some vertically. Unit looks much better if only vertical. Each space also can take approx 12 DVDs.

are the shelves adjustable to take some paperbacks as well as cds?

Unfortunately the shelves aren't adjustable.
