can it be installed on a 45 degree diagonal

Yes mine is installed on a 45 and just above pit so i can visually see water and flap opening at a glance without removing pit cover

Has anyone used this check valve on their pool? I just received mine and I am a little worried that the spring is kind of tight.

The spring feels tight, but I am pretty sure it will work on the supply side of a pool. I use it on a pump up basement sink pump. I believe that the pressure and volume on a pool pump is greater.

how does this connect to the pipe above and below? by cementing it to PVC or by tightening it up with a wrench?

You have to clean and glue slip joint side of fitting to 1 1/2" PVC pipe above and below, you then can tighten threaded quick connect part of fitting to check valve. Just remember to correctly measure for distance between glued slip joints, so you can install and remove threaded fittings of check valve if you need to.

i've never seen one that says two ports. what are the two ports about?

inlet port and an outlet port is my guess
