Inappropriate, contains abusive behavior
We liked the “no david” book so I got this one. But I became increasingly alarmed and horrified as I read this to my 4 yo. The premise is the dynamics between David and his much older brother. It starts with David doing his typical “acting out” stuff, like raiding his brother’s halloween stash and making a mess (not too bad) and secretly tying his brother’s shoelaces together under the table (why would you want a little kid to learn that?). Then it got worse when the older brother gets mad and tries to get David back. One page (see photo) has the much older boy pinning David down on all fours on the ground and trying to drool on his face, with David seemingly showing extreme fear & distress. It was downright physically abusive. Then another page has the older brother chasing David and kicking or tripping him at the end, saying “have a nice TRIP!!” How’s that ok or funny at all, no matter what age group? Of the hundreds of books Ive read to my son, this is the only one I had to shut down without getting to the end. And guess what? My son agreed, saying “daddy, they are doing really bad things.” It made me proud of him. A teaching moment, I guess
