great expectations
My last copy of The Odyssey was Robert Fitzgerald's translation in 1963. I wanted to see what was new. In a recent zoom talk about The Odyssey, Peter Green's translation was mentioned very favorably several times, along with several others. I'll circle back after finishing this copy. The scholars have wonderful comments on the jacket as noted above. This hardcover book is very helpful to a reader as myself with a good introduction, maps, a 65 page synopsis at the end, a 41 page glossary, and index. I have great expectations on the outbound voyage.

Fantastic translation, poor quality book
This is the best translation of the Odyssey, but I strongly recommend getting the hardcover version instead of the paperback. The paperback is stiff and actually uncomfortable to hold (which is rare for a paperback). The edges of the covers are sharp and hurt my hands while holding it.

Indexing problems with Kindle edition
Other reviews noted that the Kindle version didn't have an index. I didn't appreciate what that meant until my Paperwhite drained its battery spending a day trying unsuccessfully to index this book. After several remove/re-download cycles and restarting the device, my Paperwhite was still stuck in an endless indexing loop with this book. Avoid the Kindle edition.

Made a daunting read feel easy. E V Rieu's translation https://www.amazon.co.uk/Odyssey-Penguin-Classics-Homer-ebook/dp/B003P9XDA2 Written in prose form with line numbers, not as many extras as the other translation but I story easy to follow and an enjoyable read. Walter Shewring's translation https://www.amazon.co.uk/Odyssey-Oxford-Worlds-Classics-ebook/dp/B005OQGCF Written in Prose form, like Rieu's translation not packed with too many extras, I liked the lengthy essay of the historical journey of translating Homer Robert Fagles translation https://www.amazon.co.uk/Odyssey-Penguin-Classics-Deluxe-ebook/dp/B000OCXGRS Written in poetry form, a wonderful read and packed with loads of extras. Emily Wilson's translation https://www.amazon.co.uk/Odyssey-Homer-ebook/dp/B06XKNHGN1 also packed with extras and made this tough work an enjoyable and easy read.

Great book
It's well detailed and has a very clear translation to the Odyssey, needed it for my uni course and helped a lot!

Accurate perhaps but pedantic
Green's Odyssey is good and appears very accurate in a word-by-word translation, but suffers from his pedantic use of transliterated spellings for Greek names rather than using more commonly-accepted Latinized or English versions. It makes me stop and lose immersion when I come across Krete instead of Crete or Kirke instead of Circe (and many others). Most translators accept that modern readers are not familiar with the ancient Greek versions and give a nod to using at least some of the more commonly used names. His version feels stiff and a bit fusty after reading Emily Wilson's flowing translation. I feel like it's a bit of a slog to read his after reading hers. I've read Lattimore, Rieu, and Fagles as well, and would place Fagles second in my list of favourite translations.

A Literary Classic
It has turned out to be an excellent choice, but I would wish to read it again in greater detail before I write anything meaningful.
