Very pleased with this Transaction ;)
Book in great condition as described by seller at a fifth of the new book price!! Will look for them next time!!A excellent next step book for anyone working with TSQL giving you a deeper understanding into how your code actually works ( logical / physical processing ) which helps you create and debug code. I actually got by for a while using a MySQL Ben Forta primer book and a Head First SQL book to get the basics down quickly but now I’m finding some holes when approaching more complex queries for reporting ( getting multiple aggregates from multiple joins and subqueries without ruining calcs ).Of course, TSQL syntax is covered here and examples are well thought out with detailed and insightful descriptions. I also appreciate the database, exercises and solutions being available online in .sql file ready to use. Many of the solutions made me ask further questions and try new things. The phrasing the author uses is easily accessible and unforced - no extra fluff to add extra pages like in other tech books. Also I should note this is definitely not too deep for those new to TSQL - it covers all the bases well and has lots of extra little knowledge nuggets but won’t leave you behind.

Information you can take to the bank!
I am a self taught SQL programmer with an interest in "plugging some holes" in my skill set. Mr. Ben-Gan's text came highly recommended yet still exceeded my expectations. He doesn't just know the material, he is a gifted writer/teacher on the subject. There is a lot of misinformation in the various online blogs/forums but THIS TEXT provides you with a TECHNICAL GOSPEL for SQL programmers. I would say an interested beginner could absorb this material alone and qualify for entry level position. Experienced programmers will likely be provided insight and confirmation regarding their current skills and actually add more new techniques and understanding. One other thing: I bought the hard copy and quickly realized that the ebook was going to work much better for me so I purchased that as well. I have the Kindle PC reader at home and at work. The reader presents the text in a very easy to read manner and if I make notes in the text, they follow me from work to home. Perfect for study! I don't think I will ever buy another hard copy of a technical manual if I can read and annotate the ebook version everywhere in a Kindle reader.

Only thing missing is XML
I bought both this book and the Microsoft Press 70-461 Training Kit, not realizing how similar they are. Since I am studying for the exam, in retrospect, the Training Kit was the one to pick because it includes a chapter on XML, which the T-SQL Fundamentals book does not have. Other than that one difference, and if I were not studying for the exam, I would prefer the T-SQL Fundamentals book over the Training Kit book. It is more compact, and I think explains things perfectly succinctly. As a side note, neither book covers the spatial data types, which are part of MS's published outline for the exam. I'm wondering if spatial data types were a late addition to the test body of questions.

Great SQL Server T-SQL refresher book for me.
Excellent book! I've been working in SQL Server for almost 15 years but because of two companies going out of business, I had to take what I could get and ended up going almost 4 years with very little SQL Server development. This book helped me to get back up to speed and to learn some of the new features available in SQL Server 2012 and a few I forgot about that were made available in SQL Server 2008 R2. It fulfilled a purpose for me and that was getting up to speed quickly and help me start getting the rust off of me so I could get back into SQL Server development. Thank you for this very well put together T-SQL book.

I bought this textbook in hopes to learn how to ...
I bought this textbook in hopes to learn how to write SQL code. I am currently through the first 6 chapters and at first the reading was tough and the topics were a little hard to grasp (I had no prior SQL knowledge before this textbook), but the more I read and practice the practice problems the easier it has become to understand the logic and readability of the text. The practice problems are becoming easier and my code easier and easier to debug. I would suggest anyone new to SQL and wants to put in the self-study to learn the language AND learn a Microsoft version of SQL then this is the text to read.

Great Learning and Resource book for Beginners and Seniors alike.
Being a young 20 something just out of college for almost a year and being in a job that is using T-SQL. This book does help you get the fundamentals down (hence the title). It explains it in the way that you can grasp the concepts and are able to test almost all of the types of functions the book offers. For the start, I feel his explanation for the "Logical Query Process" was great and a MUST NEED knowledge to have if you want to write better queries. So I would 100% recommend this book for your collection. I always go back to read it to get some more inside SQL Knowledge.

Beyond Fundamental: Highly Useful even to a seasoned practitioner
I am strictly an applications and business intelligence developer. This book addresses almost every possible need I have for assistance in formulating T-SQL queries. A good 22 years ago I started teaching myself SQL Server in preparation for the original MCSE certification (awarded 1994!) and back then the source materials were the only ones available, and rigorously abstract to the point of 99% opacity. Mr. Ben-Gan certainly adds life and clarity to the material. Some technical books trigger a lot of WTF? responses. In contrast, what I have found is mostly "....golly, I wish I had know that a decade ago..." and "...okay, now the mystery of xxx is now revealed and it makes way to much sense..."

If you want to learn T-SQL, this will teach it
A very well written book that is easy to read. The author wrote in 'normal' language and explains terms well as they come up. The examples and code work- a rarity at times in these books. This is a good book for someone that just wants the basics; it covers areas in depth but is geared more to a person just starting out with SQL.This is a worthwhile read.

lots of good information but a bit hard to read
The book is definitely good for anyone who has used SQL for some time, knows when to use where and where having but is not sure what the rdbms does on the backend. Information is really useful if you want to gain a deeper understanding of the way queries are executed. Book comes with exercises and sample db, which you download. It includes solutions too.Style s a bit heavy but still readable. You will go slowly. Examples are excellent.

This book is a master piece!
Mr. Itzik Ben-Gan's experience as a developer and teacher shines through in this book.If you are looking to master the fundamentals of T-SQL, then this book should definitely be on your book shelf. This book teaches you not just how to program with T-SQL, but also explains the reasoning behind why certain things are the way they are in T-SQL and SQL in general.Even if you are an experienced developer, this book will have something to teach you.

Parfait

Best SQL book
Great book. Its gives a solid understanding on the logic behind querying, not just the how to do it. It makes SQL more friendly and understandable, specially for people with programming background. Declarative vs imperative programming. I can wait for the next book in the series... Will there be 'inside SQL 2012: t-sql Programming'??? What's next???
