Can you use it without the light?

Yes. The same button that turns on the humidifier turns on the light. The only difference is, you hold it for three seconds to turn on the light. To turn on the humidifier, you press it once for a steady stream, and one more time for intermittent. I've used it both ways and find that it's well worth the money. Hope that helps.
