Do i need to have a gps/sonar unit for this to work or will it track and "anchor" on it's own?

I haven't had a chance to try out the trolling motor yet but everything I've read (in the Pinpoint GPS Operation Guide) and viewed on Youtube about this motor (with internal Pinpoint GPS module) it will track a straight line and anchor on its own with the use of the hand held remote control that comes with the trolling motor. The remote is capable of recording and replaying up to 8 routes (each up to 4 miles in length) stored in the trolling motor. An example would be wanting to repeat a navigated route say next to a shore line.

The trolling motor is capable of storing up to 8 anchor points, but for this you would have to go to a specific anchor point and 'save' it. When an anchor point is recalled, the trolling motor should take you and the boat there in a straight line unless the anchor point is more than a mile away. It's important to make sure that obstructions are not in your path with either a stored track or anchor position.

In my application I am pairing this trolling motor up to two Lowrance Elite 7Ti units (one at the helm and one at the bow - bass boat) using a NMEA 2000 network and the GPS gateway module that is required to talk to the trolling motor. This set up will enable me to direct the trolling motor to a specific coordinate I've selected by touching the chart screen and creating a 'go to' cursor. Just one of the myriad of capabilities when coupled with a compatible gps/sonar unit.

Yes, with the "GPS" option, the spot lock (anchor) will hold your position. You will move around some depending on wind and currents but is will keep you in the position you set.
