Outstanding value.
These Carhartt winter were recommended to me by a friend, and I bought them 5 years ago. I would buy these again. I have recommended these to many others based on the blend of warmth, water resistance, wind resistance, solid durability, and reasonable price. These hit a sweet spot between performance and value. I have used these to keepy hands warm in a variety of activities, including snow skiing, shoveling snow off the driveway, chopping firewood, walking the dog, sitting around campfires, bike rides, and early morning boot camp (F3) workouts. The boot camp workouts have definitely taken the biggest toll, gradually wearing down the outer layers due to things such as bear crawls across icy pavement. Based on what I have put these through, I am impressed. And they still have plenty of life left! After all these years of abuse, they look great. When I bought these, my biggest concern was the fit. My hands are often between men's large and medium, depending on the brand. So I originally ordered both sizes. Either would have fit my hands, but these are a bit narrow at the wrist, and I could barely squeeze my hands in the medium. so I returned the medium and kept the size large. If you're in between sizes, I recommend the larger size. These are very warm, sometimes almost too warm. Perfect when sitting or walking. If you are active in these, they may get a bit hot and sweaty. I like warm hands, so when I am active (running or boot camp workouts), I have learned to shed layers from my upper body, and keep these thick warm gloves! When these get sweaty and steamy, I dry them over a standard heater vent. I just flip the wrist cuff up, and then set these gloves over a vent, so warm air can enter and dry the inside. I also wash these in a standard washing machine about once a year, and then dry them over a heater vent. Keeps them smelling nice. I never dry them in a clothes dryer, but just place over a heater vent. Finally, these are warm enough for most conditions on their own. But when the temps are very cold, and I know I won't be moving much, that is when I like to pair these Carhartt mittens with a thin liner glove. Occasionally that gets too hot, so I shed the mitten or the liner. For the price, these are hard to beat. Outstanding value. Highly recommend.

Perfectly warming!!!
I was looking for something to keep my hands from being*painfully* cold during winter walks/runs, and these mittens are the solution! At first, I was wearing them over some form-fitting athletic gloves, but I've started wearing the mittens alone, and even with a wind-chill temp of 1ยฐF, on an hour-long nighttime trek, my hands are warmer than as though I'm sitting in a cozy heated room. I had read that the key to warmth is to have an enclosed space where heat can gather, and these mittens provide that. They are very large and pull way up onto the wrist and seal off any air. I highly recommend these if you need to be out in cold temps and don't need dexterity for any task while you're wearing them. However, you could wear gloves underneath, and then pull off the mittens when you need to use your hands; that also gives you the option to pull them off if you start to overheat --I have actually had to pull them off several times because they are so warm!

and for people not prone to easily perspire from their hands
I bought this to use on my bike commute to work when the temperatures here dropped into the 30's. I own a pair of Pearl Izumi gloves, but those weren't cutting it once the temps got colder. These mitts work well, probably too well for what I need them to do. By the time I finished my first ride, which is only about a mile, my hands were sweating. I cannot fault the mitts for doing their job, and I have hands that when warm run a little sweaty any way. I don't ride quickly when I pedal into work, but these things seemed to block out all wind, while the lined interior toasted my fingers up quickly. I think they are constructed well and would probably keep most peoples' hands warm well into the 20 degree or less range. I live in southern Arizona, so I can't comment on their ability to keep your hands warm into the tens or single degree type weather that people might encounter in other parts of the country. For less strenuous activities (i.e. not biking or running), and for people not prone to easily perspire from their hands, these mitts seem like they would do a very good job keeping your hands warm. I have only had them a couple weeks, and I will update my post when I put some more use into them. As far as how they fit, I think they're about average for large size mittens. I don't have large hands, so there is a fair amount of room around my fingers. From everything I've read, that's the way you're supposed to size gloves and mitts; they're not supposed to be tight. If you do have large hands, I would probably recommend going a size larger than normal. I don't like having cold hands, and these mitts do the most fundamental job they're designed to do: keeping my hands warm. For those who are wondering why not five stars? I have not spent enough time with them to give them five stars, and no, I didn't take a star off because they make my hands sweat. Five stars is perfection, and perfection is hard to attain. I think four stars is a good rating, one that indicates a product is above average, which this one is. Five stars . . . well, I think those should be saved for exemplary products that redefine the standards for that type of product. We're not there with these mitts, but so far, I would recommend these to people who need to be outside in cold weather and want to keep their hands warm, as long as they aren't doing anything too vigorous, which will probably make their hands sweat in these toasty mitts.

Recommend one size up.
I just received these mittens (XL) so this review is only about first impressions and sizing. Sizing: I would suggest purchasing one size larger than your โnormalโ glove size. I have found, in general, glove sizing misleadingโฆif you wear medium clothes, you probably need large gloves. That is what I normally wear. I purchased these in XL because I planned to wear them with hand warmers. It was a good decision. Perfect fit, with room for warmers as well. First impressions: well padded, constructed appropriately, canโt speak to the strap longevity. Wrist snugness is correct, so I donโt know why some comments say they are too difficult. They are comfortable.

Actually keep your hands warm!
I bought the gloves and wore them to the Ohio Division 1 High School Football Championship Game. I spent the majority of the game with my fingers pulled into the palms of the gloves to try and stay warm (failed). I wished that I had bought the mittens instead. I promptly corrected that mistake when I got home. These are great for actually keeping your hands warm! You can slide a hand warmer inside and it actually keeps your hands warm! And if anyone runs their mouth about a grown man wearing mittens, they double as boxing gloves!

Warm, Durable, but Tricky to Put Back On When Wet
These mittens are solid and do exactly what theyโre supposed to do, theyโre warm, well insulated, and hold up great in cold conditions. They kept my hands protected while skiing in the mountains, even in harsh weather, and the quality feels durable and reliable. The only downside is that they can be hard to put back on if your hands are sweaty or wet, which happens often when skiing. Once theyโre on, theyโre great, but re-gloving mid-run takes some effort. Overall, still a very good pair of mittens, just something to keep in mind for active winter sports.
