Practical advice
I have read and followed the advice in this book as well as Dr. Kaufmans previous novel Dropping Acid. I was diagnosed with paradoxical vocal fold disorder after years of misdiagnosis from Asthma to sinus issues. Once on the diet i could breath better and drastically lost weight and felt amazing. It was very difficult to follow the diet since there were not many options to choose from in the first book. Most recipes were not what the average American has access to. It would be so helpful if receipes could be adapted to more common dishes. I was driving all over gods creation to find ingredients and was shopping ever other day to stay on these food plans. I was working out in the gym 6 days a week but i think i burned more calories cooking all the time. ( they were delicious meals.) I would highly recommend it if you are serious about changing how you feel I just wish there were simpler recipes to choose from. Dr. Kaufmann guidance has been a life changer when I was disciplined to follow it!

Helpful in learning this theory, but poor in application
The book did give me a better understanding of what Dr. Koufman views as the reasons for Acid Reflux. And for my own specific issues (LPR), it seemed to address that. It helped and encouraged me to figure out a plan to diagnose my own triggers. But I found her very dogmatic in her advice. For example, there were many items that she said are absolutely not allowed. I tried many of those items though and found that I had no issues at all with them. I also found her to be overly critical of the mainstream medical society. I understand the cynicism, but I think the picture she paints gives a false view when many people can benefit from the "normal" advice given. I also left confused on what her opinion is on certain foods. I still can't tell if whole grain bread/crackers is okay or not. I also agree with the overall opinion on these reviews that the recipes are not easily applicable. I think most people do not have the means or desire to search for the many exotic ingredients given there. We'd be better off just looking online for more reasonable recipes. So overall, I'd suggest the book to help you understand her theory and create your own plan to figure out your triggers, but definitely take her advice with a grain of salt no matter how confident she is in her opinions.

Amazingly helpful book.
After many many months of post nasal drip, throat clearing, then coughing, and hoarseness, even losing my voice occasionally, chest pain and aspirating saliva and pieces of food, and at one point coughing blood, (requiring chest x -Ray and endoscopy) all of which I treated with mucous reducing medication, antihistamines, saline nose drops, Alvuterol, cold medications and so on, It was suggested to me that GERD might be the cause of my afflictions. I ordered this book, and followed all the guidelines (still do). Within TWO DAYS my symptoms began to abate. And in one week I was a symptomatic. I knew I had GERD along with a hiatal hernia, but I had no idea these could be the source of all my problems. I have never suffered the traditional heartburn symptoms, and so I assumed I had allergies and other issues I didn't understand,, I alkalize my drinking water now (via the suggestions in the book) don't eat or drink alcohol for three hour before bedtime, and I eat smaller meals, reducing acidic food, especially later In the day. I can still have a little chocolate and coffee, just not a lot. If you are hoarse often, cough, have any of the other symptoms I had do more than a month or two, I urge you to read this informative and entirely helpful book. Also, as I did, Google some of these symptoms and you will find many reputable authorities agreeing that having an acidic body condition can be hurting you in ways you'd never imagine.

Buy this book!
I have never written reviews every before. But I had to write a review for this book. Since April (post an intense emotional stressful period), I started developing shortness of breath, chest pain right after or during the time I eat. I was tested for heart issues and it was ruled out. I was then sent to take Asthma test and was put on Steroid inhalers! I noticed I still had these breathing attacks around meal times. It was especially worse during my dinner time! I stopped eating dinner altogether fearing these attacks! My PCP and GI said it was due to Stress and that there was nothing wrong. I insisted on a endoscopy and it came out saying I have eosinophilic esophagitis. Still my GI just said it could be stress and asked me to meditate. I started researching and talking to friends and one of them suggested I get this book as she had some similar symptoms. This book changed my life!!! I owe my friend and Dr.Koufman immensely for helping me eat without fear! None of the doctors helped me!! I strictly followed the 2 week detox diet and I started seeing improvments within the second or third day. I also sleep on a remote-controlled incline bed. I think both of these are helping me. I would recommend you buy this book. It will change your life!

DO NOT HESITATE TO BUY THIS BOOK AS IT WILL CHANGE YOUR LIFE
If you have reflux or even a hint of reflux you have to buy this book. I was having second thoughts and I thought it was too expensive at ยฃ18 and was about to send it back when I had a quick flick. Within five minutes I was hooked. This doctor leaves no stone unturned she looks at every angle and it is a brilliant brilliant book that I feel sure will change my (and your) life. And If I could afford to get the money to go on a โpilgrimageโ to America and to be treated personally by Dr Jamie Kaufman, I would do so because she would transform every aspect of my health I am convinced of it. The hidden perils of reflux whether itโs silent reflux.....non-silent reflux dancing reflux.....singing reflux ....heartburn reflux - or whatever reflux cannot be underestimated. Helped along by masses of sugar consumption junkfood sugary cereals carbonated drinks we are heading for a collision with nature, early death, unnecessary surgery, pointless expensive medicines. And all we really have to do - if it not too late - is to rethink our eating. Reflux she virtually says is at the centre of almost all things bad. Iโm a non-smoker that has never been able to get rid of a cough. As a non-smoker who gave up four years ago but had a niggling cough for over two years, I was concerned. Iโd also had an autoimmune condition that resulted in excess weight and so went low carb. That worked handsomely till personal difficulties led to me eating bread and โbad carbsโ again which was probably the โtrigger foodโ the book talks about. That niggling cough then become a bad cough and that had clear chest x-rays so I was puzzled and confused. I confronted both my GP and other people in the NHS. They messed up. They got it wrong. Surprise surprise. The NHS bless their cotton socks - overstretched and understaffed - wrongly diagnosed me and sent me off in the direction of chest clinics that took months to get appointments for. Then one day an amazing Locum doctor that happened to be on that day - suggested an ENT clinic appointment who immediately diagnosed reflux. This was a huge relief but the story is not over there and I was not out of the woods. Because reflux is a silent killer and accounts for almost all oesophageal cancer cases. In fact most lung conditions lung cancer and throat cancer cannot happen without reflux. A fact l had no idea about. And if you have reflux long enough it is a precursor to those cancers. So having coughed for so long I clearly may be at risk. But the good news is according to Dr Jaime, and she speak at all times with great conviction - you can turn it all around. In a brutally honest comprehensive detailed analysis and a book that is never boring and makes total sense she says โtighten your belts. But it CAN be doneโ. And in the interim youโll lose weight ...your cough....your heartburn and years of bad habits, and if you stick with it you gain glowing eyes energy longevity and other health benefits. Look at Dr Jaime and her co-workers. They could be my โkidsโ . The proof is in the (non) pudding! They rest their own case.

Extremely helpful!
A personal thank you to Dr. Koufman! This book was the missing piece to my puzzle. Following my twin pregnancy six years ago, I developped a hiatal hernia which is a lifelong condition I now have to manage. At first I stopped dairy, then gluten, then alcohol, then sugar, then coffee...and it wasn't enough. All the while I was taking PPIs without understanding how detrimental they are to my health. After terrible side effects this last year, I went cold turkey and stopped them all together with the support of this book. In that first month without PPIs it was rough. My body had to go through withdrawl. I was tired and retreated from social life. But I kept on, ate simple, drank a lot of Mineral Water with a PH 8 and let my body rest. What I learned from Dr. Koufman was how to eat an alkaline diet and create healing for the LES and the UES. After 3 months of following her diet, I am now able to incorporate some acidic food/drink paired with alkaline foods/drinks. One short expresso with a homemade oatmeal bar is now possible :). I really liked planning out my shopping/cooking/eating for the week. Being prepared is half the battle. To read a book by a gastroenterologist who actually has acid reflux and understands all the possible symptoms is comforting. She knows what those of us who have the condition are going through. I highly recommend this book to anyone living with acid reflux disease.

Very informative
You get detailed information and very useful advice. I wish the 2 weeks diet would cover a broader range of food and be more precise abut how to measure the pH of solid food.

Manageable dietary changes with quick results
I bought this book along with the Chronic Cough Enigma. I have read both books from cover to cover. I started the recommended diet and within 3 days my post nasal drip was gone. I am now a week into the dietary changes and my nasal passage is 95% clear- I can't remember the last time I could breath clearly through my nose! It has also opened my eyes to a series of medically unexplainable symptoms that I have had off and on over the years. I look forward to what the future holds for the chronic cough that I have had for as long as I can remember. The recipes I have tried so far are very tasty.
