Purchased these to replace my very old first alert smoke detectors. Easy to install and pull the tab to activate the battery that's included.

These units were purchased to replace a different model with the same electrical connector that had been on my ceilings for over 15 years! Smoke detectors should be charged after 10. One of the old ones started beeping even with a new 9 volt battery, so time to change them all. The kit comes with a new three wire pigtail connector if your current detector uses a different plug. I didn't need to change since it is the same style. But if you do need to change yours, be sure to find and turn off the breaker switch that supplies 120 volts to your detectors. Do not try to change with live wires! The base was different from my old one, however the two screws holding the base to the electrical box are the same position. Simply loosen both, turn the old base a few degrees to free the screw heads, remove the old one. The new based can be installed by aligning the screw heads with the larger opening in the new base, turn a few degrees and tighten. My only negative is the 9 volt battery supplied. It is a low cost "heavy duty" battery not a good quality alkaline cell. I replaced them all. If your detectors are hard to get to, consider buying 9 volt lithium batteries, like the Amazon brand. Although these cost $5-8 a piece in multi pack, they will last 5-8 years without replacement. Buying the multiple detector pack was less expensive per unit than individual purchases. If you have one detector fail, or if they are more than 10 years old, replace them all!

GREAT STUFF WOULD BUY AGAIN

Order arrived in good condition, some boxes were slightly damaged, but contents were okay. Install was easy. I did 4 in about 20 minutes. I only needed 4 but the 6 pack was just a few dollars more. Now I have a few spares if one malfunctions. Hopefully they are problem free, time will tell.

Replacing 20 year old original alarms with these. Connects to my existing wiring, so I didn’t need to use the wiring that came with it. I was hoping these would attach to the same mounting bracket I already had since they’re the same brand, but they don’t. Not a big deal and actually helpful since they’re slightly wider than the old ones and covered the old paint the painters didn’t get covered around it. All I had to do was loosen the screws, twist the old mounting bracket out and put the new one on in reverse order. Easy. I was surprised these came with the backup battery already installed, so now I can return the pack of batteries I bought. Just pull the tab out and they’re activated. Comes with a dust cover I guess if these are installed during construction to keep them protected from dust. I wouldn’t use it to paint over, because it won’t cover the bracket. I would recommend these from this well-known brand.
