Great for Women's History month
I love to read stories about women that were the first of something. This is the story of an unforgettable woman and the first female fire lookout guard. I would love to read more about this amazing woman. My students really enjoyed listening to this book!

Great story but dirty book jacket on ‘new book’
Great story but book jacket was covered in greasy fingerprints and tucked into the pages of the book as if someone had leafed thru it. Not in new condition as advertised.

Beautiful book about persevering to reach your dreams and protecting nature
Amazing book about the first female fire lookout way back in the early 1900s. The story describes how Hallie persevered in her desire to become a fire ranger because of her love for the woods and hatred of fire. The illustrations are so beautifully done and compliment the story perfectly. The book is gorgeous to look at and the story is so very well written. You truly feel like you are one with Hallie in her attempt to get and do a job to protect the forests that she loves. The book shows the love Hallie had for nature and her willingness to work and sacrifice to protect it. It shows her perseverance and dedication in pursuing her dream despite repeated setbacks and refusals. It’s a great book for girls and boys to see that women can do whatever they want - even in traditionally male jobs.My only quibble, is the full on focus on fire extinguishing. I would have liked a note somewhere in the book, perhaps in the additional facts section at the end, that talked just a tiny bit about how fire is a natural part of the ecosystem and how forests need to burn sporadically to prevent massive firestorms. Despite this rather important omission, I still gave the book 5 stars because it is beautifully done and a fascinating story.I talked to my kids (boys ages 7 and 9) about the importance of fire and the importance of pursuing your dreams despite challenges and impediments. We all loved the book. While I received a free copy of this book in return for my review, the opinions expressed herein are fully my own. My boys and I loved this book and will be coming back to it again and again.

An empowering book for girls and a great teaching tool for both girls and boys.
Headstrong Hallie is an empowering book for girls and a great teaching tool for both girls and boys. With beautiful illustrations and clear, accessible prose, we learn how Hallie Morse Daggett became the first female forest guard for the U.S. Forest Service. Bisonnette’s story of Daggett’s independence, persistence, and competence is as vibrant as Hohn’s illustrations. We learn that she loved to hunt, that she loved the forest, she thrived alone in the mountains during the summers, and she was instrumental in saving forests.I love that headstrong is a positive adjective in this book. I wish I’d had such an inspiration when I was a girl, and I’m happy to be able to give it to my granddaughter.
