Part of the international 111 Places/111 Shops series with over 150 titles and 1 million copies in print worldwide Appeals to both the local market (nearly 7 million call the Bay Area home) and the tourist market (over 16 million people visit San Francisco every year) Fully illustrated with 111 full-page color photographs San Francisco: the home of hills and valleys, of dreamers and trailblazers, of hippies and hipsters. From the gold rush to the Golden Gate, the City by the Bay has always basked in the glow of its colorful and celebrated history and world-renowned landmarks. But for those who live and love on this compact seven-mile by seven-mile metropolis, San Francisco is a treasure trove of unusual neighborhood sights and places that sparkle with the allure of hidden pleasures and local lore. Discover a stairway that transports you from the depths of the ocean to the heights of outer space; take a spin class amidst the grand elegance of a repurposed 1920s movie palace; or slide down a century-old sundial that sits at the center of what was once California's first racetrack for cars. This is the real San Francisco. Strung together, the 111 experiences gathered here tell the B-side story of the city once romantically known as the Paris of the West. Review: Great book for locals looking to explore, NOT recommended for first time visitors - I've lived in the Bay Area for most of my life and purchased this book to learn about eccentric historical facts and locales within San Francisco, in preparation for a scavenger hunt in the city. I feel like this book is perfect for locals or people who are already VERY familiar with the major SF tourist sites AND city neighborhoods, and who will have many weeks/months/years/the time to explore the city's off-the-beaten-path sites. If you're looking for a visitor's guide book that will cover the major sightseeing attractions, this is NOT the book for you. For example, this book will does not cover the Golden Gate Bridge, the Palace of Fine Arts, Fisherman's Wharf, nor Coit Tower; nor does it give any high-level summary about the different neighborhoods within the city. This book is written with the assumption that you're already familiar with all of that already. If it's your first week (or even month) in SF, I would highly recommend going with a different city guide book first, so you can become better acquainted with San Francisco before coming to this book, as this one seems like it would be much better appreciated by those who are locals. From a Bay Area native's point of view- I really love this book! I like how there are pictures for every site mentioned (the picture page faces the page of each site's story), and I get a real kick reading up on the history of each site. The blurbs are memorable and well-written, and I like that they aren't too long to read. It's a nice plus that public transit lines are listed for each location. Additionally, the map at the back of the book, which includes markers for each of the places mentioned in the book, could be helpful to use for planning a trip around the city... or to plan a little fun sightseeing detour if you're, say, going out to dinner and happen to be close to some of the sites mentioned in the book. Review: Great For Locals And Tourisrs Alike - I have lived in San Francisco for eight years and am an avid walker. You would think by now I would have seen it all. I thought so. But this book has proven otherwise. It is full of hidden gem destinations that not even lifers may know about and each destination is accompanied by a succinct description of its importance and significance as well as an artistic photo. The photos are all captioned by the location address, bus routes and a useful "tip". It is a great resource by which to plan a walk and small enough to take along. It's a terrific book.

Get and use this book to really know and enjoy San Francisco!
When looking to find a gift for our daughter who had just finished grad school and moved to San Francisco, the millennial dream city, we came across this marvelous introduction to the city. Unlike other often ponderous and difficult to use guides, Ms.Petersen has crafted a delightfully easy to read and informative book. It offers an insightful introduction to many well as well as lesser known gems in San Francisco's treasure lode of magical sites. It will become your invaluable companion as you wander San Francisco's hills and winding streets and will also be the best book you can give visiting family and friends.

Convenient carry size, with a page of text and facing page photo for each item. Maps are at the end.
The book is conveniently sized (5.25" x 8") to be carried about, and has a page of text and a facing page picture of each featured place. The 111 places are arranged in alphabetical order, from "140 New Montgomery" to "Wood line". At the beginning there is a table of contents with title and one-line description of the place. Even more useful are the four maps at the end of the book with the numbers of the places shown. One can identify clusters of places to visit on a single outing. Many of my favorites such as #40 Fort Funston, #57 Land's End, #71 Moraga Street step, and #110 "wave organ" are covered, but some are not such as the 'Wind harp" in South San Francisco and Bay Model in Sausalito. But then someone has to pick the "111" items to feature. This is an excellent book to use to plan an outing to San Francisco.

Love this book.
My husband and I recently moved to San Francisco for work and I have loved this book. Itโs been a great way to learn about interesting places and history about our new home and has given us ideas on where to start exploring. San Francisco is so cool, but itโs also overwhelming with all itโs places and landmarks! I highly recommend this to anyone moving to SF or looking to plan a visit.

For Tourists & Locals Alike
This is one that even locals can appreciate--I'm one of the few born & raised here, and I've been learning all sorts of interesting factoids about my City. Beautiful photography, and it really delves into the history of each site. Truly enjoyable, and I can't wait to share it with out-of-town guests.

This is going to be a great resource getting ready for our first trip to SF ...
This is going to be a great resource getting ready for our first trip to SF this summer and to use while we're there. So great the way the book not only describes the attractions, but tells you how to get there by bus and then once there, places nearby to go for lunch or a drink.
