Q: How dense is this foam. Is it really airy or thick to get good throwing and hitting? I need a ball spongey enough to prevent injury

Hey Brian, we have tested many sponge ball for use for teaching young girls fastpitch/softball (too prevent injury and indoor use). This Sporttime coated ball is too airy and slippery. However, here are the 2 balls that work great. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0042SSUN0 (This link is for a 12pk, but this ball can be order each on Amazon). They also have different sizes - 3" would be close to baseball size. It is 4" and inflatable/adjustable (nice option) and has a good weight and balance for throwing. It also has unique surface that is easy to grip and doe not get slippy. Here is another ball that is OK: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B006YC389S. We also bought some nice foam bats on Amazon to prevent injury with young (5-8 yr) girls swinging and throwing bats :-0 Hope this helps!

Yes, Didn't realize that when I bought it. You can find them for less at Sportime.com

Q: Is this a 12inch, the same size as a 14 u regulation ball ?

Yes, 12u and up use a 12 inch ball. 10u and under use an 11 inch ball in most organizations.
