Unleash Your Creativity and Capture the Unseen
The Canon RF 100-500mm F4.5-7.1 L IS USM Super-Telephoto Lens is a true marvel that has transformed my photography experience. I paired this lens with my Canon EOS R series camera for the perfect match. The 100-500mm range is a wildlife photographer's dream, allowing me to capture feathered friends in their natural habitat with stunning clarity. Whether it's birds in flight or perched on a branch, this lens delivers exceptional results. I added the 1.5x lens extender (purchased on Amazon), which effectively turns this lens into an exceptional super telephoto without breaking the bank. Combined with my camera's sensor cropping, it effectively gives me 1000mm of up-close reach. This has opened up a world of possibilities, enabling me to get close-up shots of distant subjects like never before. Another favorite of mine is the selectable Image Stabilization (IS) modes, including one that improves the experience with Birds In Flight (BIF) photography. This mode has made capturing those moments of birds flying an absolute breeze. Quality and Durability: Canon's L-series has a solid reputation for quality and it shines through in this lens. The build quality is top-notch, and the materials used inspire confidence. I've taken this lens into challenging conditions, including dusty and damp environments, and it has held up admirably. The weather resistance is a huge plus, ensuring that I can shoot in various conditions without worry. Functionality and Performance: The autofocus, powered by Dual Nano USM motors, is incredibly fast and near-silent. Not only does this lens perform amazingly, it is also quiet. I find that the minimum focusing distance of 2.95ft allows for detailed shots, adding versatility to the lens's already impressive capabilities. The rotation-type zoom ring with torque adjustment provides precise control. User-Friendly and Design: The controls are intuitive, and I love the feel of the zoom ring in my hand. The sleek and professional aesthetics match perfectly with my Canon EOS R camera. Pros: - Exceptional telephoto range for wildlife and sports photography. - Selectable IS modes, improve image stabilization, especially for BIF. - Durable, weather-resistant build quality. - Fast and silent autofocus with Dual Nano USM. - Versatile minimum focusing distance for close-up shots. Cons: - The variable aperture (F4.5-7.1) may require adjusting ISO in low light conditions. I had no issues. - The lens's weight may require a sturdy tripod for extended use. It mounts easily! Value: While the Canon RF 100-500mm lens is an investment, it's worth every penny. The combination of superb optical performance, versatility, and durability justifies its price tag. Final Thoughts: In conclusion, the Canon RF 100-500mm F4.5-7.1 L IS USM Super-Telephoto Lens has exceeded my expectations. It's a must-have for wildlife enthusiasts, sports photographers, and anyone looking to level-up their photography game. I wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone seeking exceptional performance and versatility. Thank you, Canon, for bringing happiness and inspiration into my photography journey, and I hope this lens does the same for others.

excellent lens for hummingbird photography
The Canon RF 100-500mm is an excellent lens for hummingbird photography. I use it with my Canon R5, and the autofocus is fast and accurate, even with hummingbirds in flight. I even had one of my photos taken with this setup published as a full-page image in a bird and bloom magazine. The zoom range is very useful, image quality is sharp, and it’s comfortable enough to handhold. Very happy with this purchase!

Best in Class
Canon took their class leading EF 100-400mm zoom and made lighter while giving it 100mm more reach. The RF 100-500mm F4.5-7.1 is so good that it was the reason I first started thinking about switching back to Canon after giving up on them about a decade ago. I'll just say that the reality as lived up to the hype. It is a great lens: sharp from one end of the zoom range to the other; relatively light weight; and fast focusing. That's not to say that everything is sunshine and roses. There are three common criticisms of this lens, two of which I think are valid. First is the fact that this lens only takes a teleconverter after it is zoomed out to 300mm. This means that you can't retract the lens barrel all the way in for transport without removing the teleconverter. This is an inconvenience. And this also means that there is very little overlap in the zoom range with and without a 1.4x teleconverter. You're either at 100-500mm or you're at 420-700mm. This could potentially cost you an image in a fast-moving situation. The second criticism is that it is too expensive for what it it. It is $300 more than the EF version it replaces. Personally, I'd pay $300 just for the 1/2 lb weight savings. That said, I can't deny it is more expensive. Finally, people look at the "7.1" in the 4.5-7.1 aperture range and get concerned about the speed of the lens. But the lens is only at 7.1 for the very end of its zoom range. For the part of the zoom range that is equivalent with the EF 100-400, the apertures are pretty close at similar focal lengths. Sometimes the old lens is slightly faster; sometimes the new RF version is a little faster. The bottom line is that I have no problem recommending this lens if it is within your budget. For both landscapes and wildlife I find it to be excellent.

A Precision Weapon for the Jedi of Photography
The Force is strong with this one. The Canon RF 100-500mm f/4.5-7.1L IS USM lens is no mere tool—it is an extension of the Jedi photographer’s will, a weapon of clarity and precision in a chaotic galaxy. Balanced, it is, despite its reach. Lightweight compared to its EF predecessors, yet powerful in range. The build quality? Sturdy as a Jedi’s resolve, with weather sealing that shields against the elements, much like a lightsaber’s hilt remains steadfast in battle. Autofocus—swift as a Jedi reflex. The dual Nano USM motors operate with the silence of a Jedi infiltrating an Imperial base, locking onto subjects with unerring accuracy. Wildlife, sports, and distant starships (or airplanes) alike yield to its tracking prowess. Image stabilization? Five stops of the Force guiding your hand, rendering handheld shots as steady as a meditating Master. Even at 500mm, clarity remains, with sharpness that cuts through the darkness like a lightsaber through durasteel. The variable aperture, a slight disturbance in the Force. At 500mm, f/7.1 it is, limiting in low light. But adapt, a Jedi must. High ISO performance and stabilization mitigate the challenge, and the reward—compression, reach, and stunning image quality—outweighs the cost. Pair this lens with an RF teleconverter, and the reach extends to truly Sith-like distances. A small trade-off in light, but when distance is the battleground, victory is assured. A Jedi’s final verdict: The Canon RF 100-500mm is a weapon of choice for those who seek reach without compromise, sharpness without hesitation, and stabilization without reliance on a tripod. A true masterpiece of the L-series, deserving of a place in any Jedi’s arsenal. Five stars, this lens earns. Use it wisely.

Best lens for hobbyist wildlife photography
If you enjoy wildlife photography and are not planning on buying the mega sized zoom lenses for it, then this is your lens! It’s worth every penny. It’s been used to shoot pictures in the Galápagos Islands and Africa on safari. It produces beautiful shots. Highly highly recommend this lens

Overpriced, but a good lens for R5
I got this lens to take photos of animals, and it does an good job on my R5. I think it is overpriced for the few limitations it does have. I had a tamron 150-600mm g2 before this lens and honestly if I didn't need a ef-rf adapter attached to operate it on the R5 I would've kept using the tamron. But the adapter plus a 1.4x or 2x makes the tamron, already a big lens, look ridiculously long. This lens isn't quite telephoto enough for most of my purposes so I did get the rf 1.4x extender, and while it performs great with the adapter you only get the 300-500 range. I personally feel that white lenses are lame. It sticks out and strangers have walked up and commented on it more than anyone ever did with the tamron. I dislike the rf end caps, much harder to quickly reattach. It can be really annoying when you misplace one, since the ef ones wont work. All that being said, this lens is fast to focus and the IS is great. Very quiet lens. The 1.4x adapter when attached looks like it is part of the lens. The lens hood, with the window, is great. All the controls work and the extra control ring is cool for changing custom settings.

Pristine and Sharp
This is the best lens I have ever owned. Shot professional portraits and weddings for 20 years and this year I just got started in Nature/Bird Photography. It was between this lens and the Canon rf 200-800mm...i ultimately decided to go with L le s quality, faster autofocus, and fast subject aquisition and tracking birds in the sky. Finding birds in the sky and zooming in, is better with the 100 to 500mm. This thing is built lije a tank. Autofocus is so fast and silent and works perfectly with my R6.

Insanely great
Wow. All the good things you've heard about this lens are true. I put off buying it for a long time, wondering how often I would use 500mm. I use it almost every day (not necessarily at 500), leaving the 70-200mm (a go-to for years) on the shelf far more than I ever would have imagined. The range and weight are just about perfect. Image quality is utterly fantastic. It's expensive, but worth every cent. Find a way if you can. I'll note that I'm a fan of the RF 100-400mm, but good as it is this is in another league. I was not a fan of the RF 200-800mm. Great image quality, but too heavy for hand-holding (at least for me), and I hate using a tripod. Plus, the throw is ridiculous (probably not an issue on a tripod). That said, I'm not a birder, so rarely need 800mm. For this lens, if I need to go longer, there's always the TC. Yes, on the long end the aperture is not ideal for low light and high ISO, but a lot depends on your camera and how well it handles low light. This week I shot an evening sports event on a poorly lit field. For some shots I went up to 25,000, maybe a touch above, on the R5ii. Plenty of shadow noise, but not enough to fail a run through a quality denoiser in post. (For that I recommend DxO PhotoLab.)
