do you need to purchase the bracket to mount the thermostat or can you do it without it?

The Ecobee 4 comes with mounting screws and screw anchors. I've installed three Ecobees in my home and have not needed a special bracket. It also comes with a suitable back plate to cover up any holes left by a bigger thermostat.

Does it have a battery backup? I got rid of my Ecobee3 because it would lose its mind and not come back after a power failure.

Not a changeable battery, but there is a coin-cell back up battery.

How many sensors can you connect to one ecobee4?

Looks like you can pair up to 32 sensors to the Ecobee 4.
