Just be sure you know what you're buying, It's not magic it's a tool that requires physical work to deploy. It does what it was made to do very well just understand you're gonna have to physically crank this thing through solid wood to make it work. So as long as you want a tool and not a toy long as you understand what you're getting you will be very pleased with this tool.

After using this scotch eye for a couple years, I tried a different "settler's tool" that had a pre sharpened eye, and different cutting plane. That other tool was disappointing compared to this one. I still love this scotch eye much more even though I had to sharpen the eye, clean up the weld in the eye, and touch up the cutting plane. It just bites in so well when sharp. To be fair, this scotch eye isn't intended to have a sharpened eye to begin with, but sharpening one side makes it much more useful. So if you have files and don't mind a little work sharpening the eye, I think you'll get over the large size and lack of carrying pouch. I've only tested this and the other settler's tool on oak, so your experience may be different on softer/harder woods. Took off 1 star for ease of use due to some nicks on the cutting plane that I filed out. This may have been from shipping, but still might require more effort to clean up, or increase the effort to cut.

Took a little more muscle than I was expecting to get the initial tip to bite into the wood I was working with (soft maple), but once it bites the thing augers through without too much trouble. I’d imagine it would hang up or give more issue if trying to drill through knots or a harder wood like oak or hornbeam.

I don't know what sheerness is lol this thing is heavy and heavy-duty. Built to last. There are many projects it can be used for. It is big so it tends to crack smaller woods.

Hey need an auger, this is the one. Drill deep and easy to use. Great for old style log works. Pin and lock. Good product.

Overall seems ok. Works good for intended purposes and overall if you are looking to aquire something like this i would say to give it shot. Slightly concerned about how it might hold up long term and QA process as there is severe chipping on the end of the one i received. It doesnt seem to impact its functionality so im rolling with it for now. There was also minor chipping elsewhere. Maybe poor quality material? Might just file it out a bit to smooth it out to prevent additional chipping or snagging on things. Removing a star for the defects in material. As time passes if i feel it has stood the test of time i will update the review accordingly.

Great quality, works well. I had trouble finding a settlers wrench and got this one for a good price and it works great.

Sturdy and rigid as you would hope, on.y flaw I see is not having a slight taper for making a pin by tapering the edge would allow an easier cut.

This tool seemed good quality on arrival but broke on second attempt of using it. To make matters worse when I contacted the retailer about a refund and ask if they wanted the item returned they ignored me. Looks like I will be out of pocket. I will not be buying one of the same make or anything from the vendor!

Tried to auger out a stump, this barely put a dent in it.

Order arrived in great time, but was very disappointed with its first use, the blades and screw tip were of poor quality and had to spend a few hours making things right. This now works perfectly, but for the price I expected this to ready to use on delivery !!
