Can the citronella versions be safely burned inside of a closed tent?

Probably not a good idea, depends on the amount of ventilation, perhaps burning one to help rid the tent of a few mosquitos before you go to bed, however, the beeswax candles are by far the best thing to burn when you are in the tent.

Do they come in any smaller packages? I don't think I need 20

They used to come in 10-candle packs, but packaging may have changed the lot size. Lot size will depend on the provider, responding to your order as several providers may respond to Amazon inquiries. Watch the listing for specifics!

Are these okay to put in any lanterns?

I used them in open-top jars with sand as a base. If there is ventilation in the lantern you should be good.

Do they burn black smoke like other citronella candles? Or is it just the aroma?

These candles just have a citronella aroma. They do not produce black smoke.
