Is it better to choose a plastic ruler or a metal ruler? How to use it?

I have bought both materials. I bought a metal ruler at first, but its edges are sharp. I almost hurted my child's face, so I changed a plastic pd ruler. It is transparent, measurement can be clearer and more accurate. It did not come with instruction, but I can easily get the manual video from Google.

How do you use this? I need to order glasses online for myself and my children and I cannot figure this out.

I googled it, watched a YouTube video if I remember correctly. No instructions came with mine, so pretty annoying.
