Shoe are not solid steel

No they are not. They are pot metal, not forged steel. I broke one the very first time we used them.

How do you get stakes in the ground??

You will need to buy a Horseshoe Stake Shovel (sold separately). Mark the spot on the stake where you want ground level to be. Then purchase a Horseshoe Stake Measuring Device (sold separately). Measure the length from the pointy tip of the stake to the mark you made. Then, using the Horseshoe Stake Shovel, start digging. Measure often, using the Horseshoe Stake Measuring Device, because if you dig it too deep, you'll have to cover up the hole, and start again. Anyhoo, once you reach the exact depth as determined by the Horseshoe Stake Measuring Device, STOP DIGGING. You will now need to purchase a Horseshoe Hole Filler (sold separately). This looks like the Horseshoe Stake Shovel, but don't be fooled; it is very different, because it costs more and is a different color. At this point, you will need to place the stake in the hole, being careful to balance it so that it doesn't tip over. Start gently, very gently filling the hole with dirt, using the Horseshoe Hole Filler, and being careful not to tip the balanced stake over. Continue filling the hole until the ground is level. Then, when tomorrow gets here, you can measure the proper distance from the first stake to the desired location of the second stake, and repeat the process, remembering to do this one left-handed, and counterclockwise.

We had the same experience since this product is so poorly made. We had our new Champion horseshoes out of their case for less than 20 minutes before two of them broke in half. There are a lot of other options available on the web that have solid steel horseshoes, and I would highly recommend those instead of trying to replace these with more of the same. Good luck

Does the box give weight of the horseshoes and the length and diameter of the stakes ?

I don't remember, but My recommendation is not to buy these. First time using them, when one shoe hit another on the ground, shoe broke.
