Review: Highly recommended for beginner music students. - I'm still working my way through this excellent book and already learning things I never knew about understanding music. I bought both of Mr Carter's books in Kindle versions, and just had to have this one in printed format. I would have bought both, but already have two paperback Music Theory books, but "How to Read Music" is exactly what I needed. One very minor criticism demonstrates the danger of global replace commands: as far as I've read, every occurrence of eighth has been replaced by eight. A small confusion for a rank beginner like me, but thankfully it has not caused any misunderstanding. A darned good book and there should be more writing as clear and easy to understand as Mister Carter's works. My thanks. Review: Clear, concise and simple. Perfect for Beginner like me. - I purchased this book and the companion book Music Theory to supplement the online course on How to Play the Piano that I am taking. Perfect! I've read this book cover to cover and, with a small base I had to begin with, I feel confident that I can decipher any sheet music that is suitable for a beginner (maybe even beyond!). Thank you so much for a great resource.

Simple to understand
I've played music (guitar) all my life by ear. During downtime due to covid I thought I'd try and find out how to read music. This book is very basic, I have learned the meaning of the shape of notes, circles of 5th.'s. I am now going to get the companion book about the Theory of Music. It is a joy to know how and why music is written as it is.

Really basic
I bought this based on the recommendation from Nicolas Carter Music Theory book. I returned to music later in life and thought it would help move me forward in my music journey. If you never had music training this book maybe for you. If you have read music in the past, you find this book very basic.

I enjoy the way Nicolas Carter teaches.
I am completely new to music, two months with zero music background. I started with The Only Guitar Book You'll Ever Need, (not Nicolas Carters), it didn't explain things well enough for a complete beginner. I then purchased Music Theory by Nicolas Carter, it was a great book, then I read HOW TO READ MUSIC by Erich Andreas, When I finished it I felt he didn't explain things well enough. I knew Nicolas Carter explained things very well in his theory book, so I bought this book. This book did a good job of explaining things. I probably would have given it 4 1/2 stars as I feel I need to research a little more online. NICHOLAS CARTER goes a little farther with his explanations.
