Persona 5 Royal: Standard Edition - PlayStation 4

If I've learned anything from this remaster, it's that the new folks on the Persona team over at Atlus know what they're doing. I had my worries. I know of the controversies; the poorly handled gay swingers in Shinjuku and on the Beach, the very questionable romance choices... yes, there were some problems, but they didn't devalue Persona 5 as a game at all, nor did the fixing of one of them.The truth is, when I played Persona 5, I thought it would be a near insurmountable task to make a better game. Even the menu screens were polished beyond belief. The music was superb and groundbreaking, the setting and thematic choices were incredibly attractive and fitting, and the artstyle was profoundly stylish. The game itself was above average, as was the story; definitely room for improvement in those departments.That's where Royal shines. More character depth, more room for the game to grow, and most importantly: actually fun dungeons. Yes, even the dungeons known to be notoriously bad and boring in the base edition were made truly fun in the Royal remaster (at least, in my opinion). The characters went from incredibly to extraordinary in their execution, and the introduction of psychology was a brilliant idea for a game which involves diving into people's minds; one that was well executed too, but for reasons I can't say as it would be spoiling the game.Needless to say that the Royal remaster of Persona 5 took an already superb game and improved upon it, turning it into a leader among games which cannot be overthrown, at least not for a very long time. Now, if they could only improve the character models a bit more, then I'd have no room for any complaints whatsoever. That's pretty much about the only negative I can think of, and it's not that they're really even that bad, they're just not as stellar as the rest of the game's aspects.

I rarely write game reviews but this one deserves some of my time. I never played the original P5 and I went into P5R extremely blind, having almost no concept of the story or even who made up the party cast, with only my enjoyment (mostly) of P4 (which I liked well enough, but did not love) and my friends' recommendations talking me into giving this one a try.I was blown away by how much this game took over my life. At a 105-hour playtime for my first go (with virtually no level-grinding) it definitely gave me my money's worth. I usually get pretty attached to JRPG characters, but I didn't expect to be as involved as I was with this cast. I went from hating some characters to absolutely adoring them by the time the game was over, and every character's side story had me itching to meet with them again and again to see what happened to them, always to the point that I wanted to go out of my way to help them (as you should, given the protagonist's goals and personality).The story is an extremely on-the-nose view of society at times, and it was riveting to see certain problems escalated on the supernatural scale. There were a couple scenes that felt unnecessary or dragged on too long, but that literally made up less than 2% of my runtime overall so I can't even fault it for that.Also, it should be worth noting that I am not good at strategy games and I usually don't like them, but the gameplay never felt unbalanced or too over-the-top challenging as SMT has come to be known for (with the exception of one boss, but a quick Google search assured me that everyone hates this boss and has issues with it and there were some helpful tips to get around it). As I mentioned above, I did almost no level-grinding, with my one exception being that I did so for a bit before trying the very first boss just in case (I was still scarred by getting absolutely flattened by vanilla P4 enemies in the past). But the game does a very good job of balancing fights in between scenes so that you don't have to go out of your way to power yourself up; as long as you don't just run past everything in a dungeon, chances are good you'll be at a comfortable level for each boss.I could go on all day about this game, but suffice to say I got a lot more out of it than what I was expecting. While I have nothing against P4, I thought P5 was an improvement on the series in every way, from the battle system to the social aspects to even just the likability of the main cast. The number of plot twists in this game is staggering, and the fact that they are all GOOD plot twists is even more amazing.TL;DR if you're waffling on trying this game and the points I made appeal to you, I say go for it, especially if it's on sale like it was when I lucked out and bought it. I would definitely recommend P5R over the original, also, given that a lot of the content I enjoyed most is only available in this version.And as a final side note, once I finished the game, I looked up the "censorship controversy" that a lot of these reviews ramble about... and please, pay them no attention. The scenes in question weren't even "censored," the translation was just changed slightly to have a more acceptable cultural annotation than what's considered okay in Japan. These kinds of changes are made to every single thing that gets translated into English, and they never get called out because they just don't matter (like this one). If you're honestly angry about that insignificant change, you're too sensitive to be giving your public opinion about anything.

Los juegos de Personas se han caracterizado por ser muy buenos de juegos del genero JRPG y este juego no es la excepción. Si te gustan los simuladores de vida, las "waifus y los rpgs de la vieja escuela, no lo dudes y compralo, vale la pena. Pero hay un pequeño detalle en relación con la primera version y la royal. Si bien la royal tiene 2 personajes y un "nivel" extra que agrega aprox. unas 15 horas de juego, algunas mejoras en las mecanicas del juego, unas ligeras mejoras en el "performance" del juego (esta adaptado para que corra mejor en ps4 pro) é incluye todo el dlc de la primera version, humildemente pienso que por esas mejoras no vale la pena pagar lo que cuesta la version Royal.Por eso recomiendo que si nunca has jugado un juego de Persona y solo quieres checar que tal estan, compra la primera version que es más barata y asi, si te decepciona, no te va a doler el codo por haber hecho el gasto pero si ya sabes de que va la serie y que por "x" ó por "y" no lo jugaste cuando salio originalmente (como yó) pues compra la version que te indique tu bolsillo.

One of the best modern day JRPGs. A huge upgrade from the base version of the game.
