Exactly what this female grad student was looking for!
*Edit, January 2018 I am still loving this bag! I’ve used it as my everyday backpack as a high school teacher for the past few years, and still find it absolutely perfect for my needs. However, a few weeks ago I messed up - I tried to squeeze too much in the bag (it is definitely a small backpack, which is what I love most about it) and the zipper seam ripped. But come on...after years of constant use, I just can’t be upset. And really, it was my fault. Everything else about the bag is still holding up beautifully. And I can’t say enough about how much I love the size. Perfect for carrying a laptop, tablet, and a small stack of grading. No extra space means I stay organized and only carry what I need. I’ll honestly probably buy another of these if I can’t get the zipper fixed on this one. See my original review below for a full description of the backpack - I still agree with every word! Even though I sound like I was paid to write this, I swear I wasn’t. Original review, August 2013 Here's the deal: finding a backpack online is hard. If you're like me, you spend hours looking at potential purchases, agonizing over the fact that you can't see, hold, or try out what you're considering spending money on. Since I know how difficult it is to find a backpack online, and because I'm so pleased with this product, I'm going to try to give a very comprehensive review. Note that I am a female grad student who uses this bag to carry an ultrabook, iPad, small paperback philosophy texts, and a notebook or two to and from campus every day. With that said, here goes: The price and quality: I was a little apprehensive about the price of the Triple Trek, since the other backpacks I was considering (Case Logic 15", Belkin Slim, and Belkin Core mainly) were all $25-40. While it may not be a lot to many, to someone in grad school $58 is a lot to spend on a backpack. In my opinion, though, it was worth the price. The backpack is both lightweight and sturdy-feeling, and appears to be of good quality. The padding is very good, and the weight distribution is fantastic. I wouldn't pay too much more than what I did for this bag, but that may just be because I'm cheap. All in all, I think it's a good price, and if you can find it for less, even better! The appearance: I wasn't quite sure what to expect here. The other reviews said it looked great, but the pictures are just not good quality. The bag sorta looked like fake leather to me, but I decided to believe the other reviewers when they said it looked good. They were right! I really like the look of the bag. The material is not fake leather but is that woven nylon material that many backpacks are made of. The black zippers, zipper pulls, and logo give the back a really sleek look, as does the size. And speaking of the size... The size: This is honestly my favorite part about the bag. I absolutely LOVE the size of it! I'm a 5' 5" woman, so it's not like I'm super tiny. But even so, I'm so sick of backpacks that are so long that they cover my butt! I tighten the straps as much as possible, but the bags are always still so long. Not only is this uncomfortable (a backpack should lay flat along your back), but it looks silly and is just a waste of space! I spent hours looking on Amazon and other places, trying to find a backpack that was roughly the length of, you know, my back. And here, I finally found one. When I saw that the Triple Trek was only 14" compared to 18" on almost all of the other bags I was looking at, I knew I had to at least give it a shot. And I am so happy I did! Ladies, if you've been looking for a small backpack (that you don't need to carry giant textbooks with), please try this one! The compartments: The laptop pocket perfectly fits my ultrabook in its envelope-style case, so I'm certain it would fit a non-ultrabook that's not in a case. The tablet pocket also perfectly fits my iPad in its smart case, and would probably fit one in a slightly larger case as well (an Otterbox would definitely be a stretch). These two pockets are very nicely padded and I don't feel the need to gingerly set the bag down every time. The space between the two padded pockets inside the main compartment is perfect for what I was looking to carry, which is just a couple paperback books, a planner, and a notebook. To give you a size reference, I'd say you could squeeze (and I mean squeeeeze) 2 3-subject notebooks in there, and 3 of those if you don't have a laptop or tablet in at the time. The front pocket has a couple spots for pens, plus another small pockets and a small mesh pocket. In front of these you could fit another paperback if you needed to. There's also a clip to attach keys in this front pocket. The top pocket is soft and would be perfect for a cell phone or game device, and has the headphone pass-through. The hidden water bottle pocket on the side is just genius; it's there when you need it, but tucks away when you don't to keep the bag looking neat and streamlined. I'd imagine you could shove a few pens in that pocket as well, if you never plan to use the mesh water bottle holder. Finally, there's also a hidden on the right side of the bag right next to your back. It's about 8" or so, is very flat, and is held closed by a 3" strip of Velcro. I actually don't know what I'd put in that pocket, but its so flat and inconspicuous that it doesn't detract from the bag whatsoever even if it's never used. I imagine that if you use the bag as a carry-on that this would be the perfect place for a passport and boarding pass, as it is very easy to access. Conclusion: I love this bag! After so long searching for the perfect backpack, I think I can say that I found it! I would absolutely recommend this bag, especially to ladies. It's perfect for school or business, as long as you travel light.

A *slim* backpack that carries its weight quite well
This is an incredibly well thought out backpack. I only wish it were a sling bag! I'm using it w/ a Dell Inspiron 13-7000 which is very thin and spec'd as a 13.3" laptop. I can easily fit a power supply and another tablet in the main compartment. In fact there's two protected compartments - on for the laptop and one for a tablet/ipad sized device - plus central open storage. There's two outer compartments - one at the top which is felt lined and good from smartphone sized items and a lower one w/ more of a component type interior. The lower larger compartment fits my Bose QC headphone case (w/ not much room to spare). Alternatively it fits a Jabra USB headset which leaves plenty of room for accessories like mice, USB network+hub, Flash drives, etc. The quality of the backpack is very good and I don't expect having issues w/ it as it ages over the next few years. It will be my every-day pack to/from work and also my handbag carry-on for flights. Based on how I pack it, it satisfies the newer smaller 2nd smaller carry-on requirement I've seen online for some airlines (16"x12"x6"). Most backpacks and sling bags exceed these dimensions so it would be treated as the larger (primary) carry-on. I should also mention that, while the build quality is quite good, it still feels very light compared the assortment of other backpacks I've used over the past few years (e.g. Ful, High Sierra).

Best Bag of the Year - Quality, Utility and Style
Best Bag of the Year?? Definitely a keeper. Low profile off the back, all available room inside is accessible. Only corny feature is James Bond Hidden Zipper Pocket that will only fit a small plastic bottle. The main compartment is divided into three sections, two of them micro fiber fleece lined. The zippers are nylon and the shiny steel grey finger grips are an attractive detail. The pocket on the strap side is for the laptop and its snug against your (padded) back, with a velcro strap closure to boot, the center, an expandable bag floor to zipper top cavern, and the outside another velcro strap for a pad. There are two other outside pockets, other than that silly waterbottle, the top one fleece lined with a place to string your headset through, if you are so inclined, and a flap that opens up to the usual wallet, key, pens storage that I rarely use, I keep that stuff in my pockets! It is intended for the slimmest of laptops and my Dell Inspiron would fit only without its sleeve, in a seam stretching tight fit. My iPad 2 with case flops around in the opposing pocket. So one velcro strap barely reaches across my 'oversized' Dell laptop, while the iPad strap is as tight as possible and it flops around in the pocket. Maybe this is really for the Mac machines? I will probably carry the laptop in the main compartment in a sleeve and use the padded laptop pocket for power brick and cables. I puit my Anker Micro Mouse in the fleece line pocket. It's very stylish when stuffed and looks good on too. The only thing is the grab through handle, between the straps, is made for a smaller hand than mine. Four fingers were crunched up, so maybe three. All in all a very good small back pack that you can slip over one shoulder (and not look like a 7th grader), or carry like a bag into a meeting.

Fantastic SMALL backpack
Overall: As a smaller woman, I highly recommend this small, professional-looking, sturdy backpack. Size: This backpack just barely fits a 15" MacBook. The main pocket is small, but fits a stack of papers to be graded as well as power cables and whatnot. The front pockets are surprisingly spacious and fit a good array of cables, pens and my phone. I keep a small notebook in the iPad pocket. As a smaller woman I was looking for a backpack that was no bigger than it had to be while still being functional, and this is the perfect size. Looks: Nice and professional. A backpack will never look as professional as a messenger bag, but this is as close as it comes. The material is black canvas and the overall presentation is sleek. I have actually had colleagues ask where I got it. I like the look better than the leather backpack I tried, and it's definitely more flexible. It looks decent even when stuffed full of papers. Durability: Reasonable but not great. I used the first one I got for about two years of very heavy use (and two pandemic years of almost no use). The seams around the front are getting very strained, and look like they will blow out sooner or later; the handle across the top has a small tear. I wish it had lasted longer, but I use backpacks to death, so it's probably to be expected.

Only lasted 3 years, but it's still my favorite cheap compact backpack
If you need to only carry around the essentials including a laptop, this backpack is just the right size. Laptop compartment is easy to access, and I love the quick access pocket at the top for keeping frequently used small items like chap stick or hand sanitizer. However, the durability leaves a lot to be desired, and the water bottle holder is legitimately unusable. At $40 it is still a decent value, I just wish they would make a $100 version with better materials and usable water bottle holder, and I wish they had a slightly larger version as well. Pros: Just big enough to carry the basics; a laptop and charger, a couple accessories/smaller everyday items, plus room to add maybe one sweater or light jacket Top quick access pocket is very convenient Relatively comfortable, the handle being integrated into the straps helps it contour to the back of your neck Generally pretty lightweight At $40, it is one of my favorite super affordable daily minimal laptop backpacks, through it has flaws Cons: 2 of the zippers broke after 3 years The water bottle holder is 100% useless. It is a little mesh holder that comes out of a zipper and it's too small even for the tiny 8oz red bull cans, let alone literally any water bottle The reflective weatherproof coating on the zippers started to peal and flake off after about a year Some of the seams started ripping after about 2 years (see pics) Cheaper materials, but the $40 price tag mostly justifies that

Yes, bottles CAN fit!
Many reviews of this backpack, which I've had for nearly 2 years now, state that the bottle holder cannot hold a reasonable (or sometimes any) sized bottle. Included in my pictures you can see that it can indeed hold at least a couple of simple plastic bottles including a 12 ounce BAI tea bottle and a 17 ounce ICE drink bottle. Buy one, wash & reuse. This pouch can be used for ID badges, car keys (a large key ring would fit), several pens or mechanical pencils as well. I believe the Kensington Triple Trek is intended as a commuter backpack primarily for those needing to transport laptops and related gear, I find the 2 bottle sizes suitable. I can make it through a 2 hour meeting with either one, and simply refill before the next meeting or task. The backpack with its main section loaded measures about 4 inches deep at the bottom and 2 inches at the top. Another inch or so would protrude if the front pockets were stuffed. I took a couple stars off since I don't believe this one is really that "waterproof" but likely water resistant. Due to its slim size, many people could simply carry a rain jacket within the backpack and put it on when needed OVER the backpack, should rain come. It's quite professional looking with the brand badge and matching zipper pull are all silver-gunmetal in color. As some have mentioned, the zipper pulls CAN get caught and hung up at odd angles but this only takes a half-second to correct when needed before pulling on the zipper. Another of my photos shows my 14.1 screen sized HP Elitebook laptop. Note the amount of space afforded between the top of the laptop and the top of the backpack. AND, this is with the laptop sitting on top of a 1/2 inch high solid foam piece that I have in the bottom of the laptop slot for additional "drop protection". The flexible velcro strap keeps the laptop in firmly and such straps are getting more rare. In another photo I display the laptop, plus a full sized mousepad in the tablet sleeve (provided additional laptop protection since I don't often use a tablet computer, and a full-sized 1-inch 3 ring binder. Still this section is not completely full. Note: a 1-inch D-ring style binder WILL also fit in between the laptop and tablet storage sections. Included photos show that both my 14.1 screen HP and, a Microsoft Surface Pro 4 will fit together along with a D-ring 1-inch binder between them, OR, with the laptop and Surface together in the same laptop section, still secured by the velcro strap (it's long enough). Did I mention that the Surface has it's "Type Cover" attached? Keeping the rectangular shape of the backpack from top to bottom makes this all possible. Kensington didn't narrow the top of the backpack so much that it would prevent this much lengthwise storage of paperwork and devices. Carrying all 3 of these along with associated charger cables, bricks, mice and such would likely bring the total to over 10 pounds of course! I'm saying the backpack can do it, not that you should...The top front pocket is softly lined like the laptop and tablet sleeves are and measures 6.75 inches deep of usable space by 8 inches across. The bottom front pocket, with 2 pen/pencil slots, a key keeper, a covered slide in pocket (that holds my iphone 13-mini in an otterbox case, and another such slide in pocket with mesh so you can see what's in it, along with additional storage under these pockets and pen & key holders. In total, it measures 7.5 inches wide of usable space and 9 inches depth-wise. I feel that Kensington really maximize the amount of usable space in this smaller and very versatile backpack. Thanks for reading!

Just the right size for my needs
I recently got a dog and started walking him 5-10 miles a day. Sometimes we stop for lunch where I like to read while my four-legged buddy enjoys a treat and toy. I needed something to carry a few thing without being overly bulky or uncomfortable. Buying the right backpack was important to me. I’ve obsessed over this and held off on buying one for months because the exact size was critical. It needed to be big enough to hold up to a 13” laptop/tablet, a book, glasses, dog treats, and a few other accessories—but not much bigger. I was surprised to see how few backpacks fit within this narrow range. I found messenger bags and slings that were the right size but wanted maximum comfort too; being balanced on my back was a must so that ruled them out. When I searched for “small backpacks”, the results would bring up bags that either didn’t have padded laptop compartments, held much bigger laptops, or were pink with “Hello Kitty” written on them. When I discovered the Kensington bag it immediately caught my attention. It seemed to be the right size, nicely padded straps, a sensible number of compartments that are properly sized, and well padded. My biggest reservation was reports about bad zippers but everything else sounded just right so I ordered it. I couldn’t be happier. The size is perfect. It can hold an iPad 12.9 in the laptop area, a smaller iPad in the second padded compartment, a notebook of paper and a few other things in the main compartment ( I carry a collapsible dog dish and treats there too). The smaller compartments are well sized also. The top compartment is made for a phone but there’s room for a lot more than just that. The lower compartment can hold electronic accessories, pens, etc.. The two features I think could be improved are the bottle holder and the zipper (but not for the reason others have stated). I doubt that I’ll use the bottle holder. It’s small and not very convenient. It may be handy for very small bottles but nothing substantial. I haven’t had a problem with the zipper snagging as others have reported and I’m pretty careless with zippers. What I noticed though is the zipper handles have a tendency to stick sideways in their rings. It’s as if the handle receiver is just a little small for the handle. Not a deal breaker but it takes a second to straighten it out before zip-unzipping. If you’re looking for a backpack that will hold a small laptop safely as well as a few other things without being so big that you look like you’re hiking to the summit at Everest, this is a great choice. It is well made, well thought out, comfortable, and appropriately attractive for men and women.

Drop in quality compared to previous years
This is my third purchase of seemingly same backpack. First I got around 2013 mb, next in 2017. Both were of perfect quality and lasted quite long, considering very often use. I was excited to see that the same backpack is still being produced and just bought a new one from Amazon. But got very disappointed with the quality, it dropped dramatically from 2017. In terms of design it is exactly the same product, but materials feel much cheaper, especially zipper. Fabric is worse too. Will see how long it last, but my guess would be not too long. And it is less pleasant to use too.

Piccolo e veramente ben realizzato!

great lightweight pack - fits TP400 series laptops
This is an excellent sized backpack for Lenovo Thinkpad 4xx series laptops (14" screen). I use a TP440p but I do not use the dedicated inner pocket for a laptop -- I just simply slide it into the main area. Very quick and easy to use. Padding is decent enough unless you are going to throw the pack around. I respect my equipment, so I'm careful, and the padding on this backpack is more than sufficient for my purposes. The pack is very light-weight and carries a water bottle, which was the main feature I was after in a pack this size. The hidden pocket (velcro closure) along the back right (see pics) is a great bonus and I love it for quick access to my car keys and office pass card. The bottom padding on the back can slip over the handle of a carry-on suitcase if you are an airport traveler. The zippers cannot be locked though. The inner lining is soft, and the perfect size for a snug fit for the laptop and a book, and there is even an extra pocket for an iPad within the main compartment. The secondary zippered pocket is generous enough to fit the power supply and other odds and ends, but personally I don't carry it, given that the Thinkpad has a 10 hour battery life and I prefer to carry less weight. The top mini-zippered pocket is great for loose change and earbuds and fits even the largest cellphones on the market. The mesh bottle holder will hold a 500ml water bottle and can be hidden away behind a zipper. I think it would have been better to make this a solid nylon fabric holder, as it would have been more robust. My only negative comment is that the zippers are poor quality plastic (not YKK brand) and seem to be failing rather quickly. Mine have lost some of the teeth (main compartment), or the zipper does not run smoothly for the full length (secondary zippered compartment), and I've only used the pack for 3 months. Time for a warranty exchange. I would buy again if the zippers were improved (larger size teeth) for much more frequent use. Update 7July2015: Called in to Kensington Support and opened a ticket for this bag last week based on my zipper issues. 4 days later, they Fedex'd me a brand new bag. That's what I call customer service and standing behind your product. Very pleased.
