How do you actually have the nuggets to charge that much for one sleeve?

They have the nuggets because some people, and you may use the word of your choice to describe thos people, will pay it. Nuggets tend to expand to fit a customer's willingness to drop cash. Blame the folks with more money than they really need.

can this be used on steel posts?

This is to protect wood. However if you can shrink wrap to metal, I would venture to say it would help preserve the metal post.

how long is the product? 4x4 and 6x6 versions?

Can you cut the postsaver into two pieces? 14" is too long for my application.
