Rail Guide 2020

Wasn't sure what this book was going to be like as there was no illustrations of the pages on the website. Can see why this is a must for train lovers, brought mainly to see the train system in each county thorough out Britain, so would be good if the writers of the book put index in the back/front to this effect; as tried to find a train book that covered the infrastructure of each county in Britain, aid to moving in the future from my current position - love the fact it covers heritage railways and others - as I really do love trains and try to travel on holiday on the steam lines when ever possible. - still regardless why you buy this book it really is interesting, and good quality that also includes the pictures.

Comprehensive
My first copy of this annual. Scope very wide; depth of info shallow - but you can't have both in one volume.Navigating by operator takes getting used to, especially since it's not in alphabetical order, nor are 'sub-operators' (e.g. Heathrow Express is buried in Great Western Railway and Southern is buried in Govia Thameslink) easy to isolate; the use of colours here would help. The Isle of Wight's Island Line is in there, but good luck finding it.The maps of each operator are disappointing and are clearly a space/info compromise. Example: nothing is shown for Govia (Southern!) west of Havant, so the whole routes to Portsmouth and to Southampton are missing. This I call shabby. Suggestion: expand the maps from a single sheet to a double page spread and/or put them in their own section.Physical quality is very good - especially at GBP18. Colour illustrations well thought out, with good depictions of liveries.Books like this annual are inevitably out of date before they are published. Some work on stock ordered but not yet delivered (beyond a mere footnote) would be helpful. List them in italics, say. If there is a reference on online updates, I haven't found it.Heritage railway data seems little more than annoying coda to the author. The list of heritage railways is poor, all of them squeezed into just 3.5 pages. Just two fields: name and postal address. Not even a website url. If you're going to sell on the basis of being comprehensive - then you'd better be comprehensive. Not recommended for heritage railway data. My guess is the author was told not to exceed 400 published pages and made compromises accordingly. So be it - but why not run to two volumes with so much more to publish?Having nit-picked, it still gets 4/5 stars from me; it is, in terms of scope, probably the best single topical resource on railway traction in the British Isles. I say "British Isles" because it includes both Ireland and Northern Ireland, as well as The Isle of Man.
