It says to trim the wick to 1/4" or less. Why is that?

Trimming the wick reduces the amount of soot and increases the burn time of the candle.

Does this work to repel other flying insects such as flies or bees?

Surprisingly so, I just tried the other night for flies and it did not work. Works amazingly well for mosquitoes. We usually use 3-4 at a time with 6 or so sitting around the table outside.

Can this be used indoors?

I don't believe this is recommended for indoor use. It gives off fumes/smoke when candle is lit.

Is this a citronella product or is there any odor associated with this candle?

There is an odor. The candle heats the chemical pack and then emits something like what is in OFF. Smell isn't bad. I light it before we go out.
