Use features like bookmarks, note taking and highlighting while reading The Powell Expedition: New Discoveries about John Wesley Powell's 1869 River Journey. Review: Intriguing new research on the Powell Expedition - Don Lago takes us on an adventure in investigation that explores some of the most nagging questions of the Powell expedition, beginning with the authenticity of James White’s river journey that is still debated in the river community. Lago challenges our assumptions about the first Powell expedition, focusing on the crew with particular attention to the three men who “deserted” at Separation Rapids, as well as the actions of Powell himself before, during and after the first expedition. Digging into new evidence gathered for over 20 years of intensive research, Lago makes many intriguing connections and shares various “what if” scenarios for the reader to consider, some leading to dead-ends (at least for now) and others questioning commonly held beliefs based on the biased conclusions of some well-known historians. Lago insists on objectivity as he lets hard evidence speak for itself, but he also tells the background stories in engaging ways that deepen our understanding of the Powell expedition, including the crew, the boats, and many other individuals connected to the expedition in sometimes surprising ways. I highly recommend Lago’s The Powell Expedition to all of those who value the history of river exploration in the West, including new facts that challenge assumptions and prompt new questions regarding this historic adventure. Review: Much New Information on the Lives and Backgrounds of Powell and His First Crew! - Excellent work! Don Lago is an outstanding historian and researcher! He has unearthed much new information about the crew of Powell's 1869 Expedition and the inter-relationships of several of Powell's crew. Great read for persons wanting information about the backgrounds and lives of the crew!

The Untold Stories of Powell and his Men on the 1869 Exploration of the Colorado River
Don Lago is one of the best, if not THE best, Grand Canyon historians. In his latest book, he has managed to correct many historic errors about Powell and the 1869 exploration of the Colorado River. Lago is a master at ferretting out information overlooked for nearly 150 years. If you think you know all there is about Powell and his men, you must read this book. If you are not familiar with Powell and his men and want accurate information, you must read this book.
