ER310, Emergency Crank Weather AM/FM Radio - Red/Black

I was delightfully surprised when I discovered that I could listen to the radio simultaneously solar-charging it!( and it was actually signaling that the battery was almost dead-amazing). It does run out quickly but even on cloudy-and I mean very cloudy, in the Northeast, in winter, when the sun is low type cloudy-days, it recharges wonderfully. I've never had to crank it or put in batteries, just install the special battery they send with the device. Great product, good price. You do need to use your own iPhone charging cable if you want to charge it by a household electrical receptacle-via The USB charging capability.( honestly-There are so many ways to charge this radio, more than they tell you). All the other ones I've bought and returned because they were cheap knock off's. The L.L. Bean model made by Eton-a cheap joke, made in China I'm sure-obviously, what isn't. This is made in the good all USA and This is sturdy, I even had it outside during some rain sprinkles-And it was still recharging amazingly-I just brought it inside and use a towel to wipe it off. It is well-designed, well-built and I think I will get years of use out of it. I will probably buy at least One more just to have on hand for bartering purposes.… {You know… When the time comes when even bitcoin is nonnegotiable! Silver is good for bartering but I like to have a stash of things that people won't do without-kind of like a store-different kinds of toothpaste, hair ties, deodorant(men's and women's),even tobacco and hard alcohol-a good thing to have if someone needs a tooth pulled or, God( can I still say that word on social media?! ) forbid, a mangled finger amputated. If you think the hospitals are going to be open and you'll be able to just waltz into an emergency room and have some doctor sew-up a wound then you probably shouldn't be reading this review} toilet paper toilet paper toilet paper and paper towels, hygiene products, toothpicks, dental floss, plastic baggies and six mill 100 foot rolls of clear plastic and brand new tarps.... obviously it's best that everything is all in its new packaging not opened. Really All you have to do is go through your day and you'll realize how bummed out you would be if you had to go three months without "X ".... heck I haven't tried going to days without electricity then try six days without power and pretend you don't have any shampoo or soap or toothpaste or toothbrush for that matter and see how you feel… Have you got water? You can't go without water for more than two days pier People always think food OK I got everything I need because I've got food. Believe me Americans don't need food-we could go without food for quite a long time and it would be better for us. But, H2O, water, that clear beautiful liquid that you're thirsty dry throat will quench and long for-you better have that and a way to filter it in a way to get to where the source is. Maybe you can't. So that's when these bartering items will really come in handy-C I've convinced you?! I am not crazy. In addition to preparing survival tools and food it's very smart to have things with which you can trade for handyperson's services (a plumber, an electrician or even a dentist). Ok ok...Some people reading this will think I've gone off the cliff but other people who know where I'm at will 'get it'! It's OK if you think I'm crazy, I don't mind. Don't hesitate to buy this if you're looking for: 1) just a fairly good, easily portable, cool-looking radio (I bought the red one and I really like it and it's easy to find when I'm rushing out the door to do yardwork) 2)a radio for emergencies when there is no electricity 3)a super gift

Very easy to use, packed with great emergency features. The rechargeable battery has 3 ways to charge it- from a wall outlet, from the built-in mini solar panel, or from the hand crank. Or you can use 6 (not 4) AA batteries. It is lightweight but has a sturdy build quality, even a carrying handle. I've been using it pretty much every day since it came in. I learned from my previous emergency radio that a rechargeable but rarely-used battery pack can corrode and ruin the whole unit just like regular batteries. Don't let this happen to you- check the rechargeable battery on a regular basis. It can tune in to AM, FM, and weather bands, the sound is good from the speaker, and there's an extendable antenna to improve reception. Too bad it doesn't have shortwave band. Can be used as a power bank also.

Hurricane Season! Everyone's least-favorite time of the year. The Oceans are warming and Holy Moley it's too damn early to have category FIVE monsters spooling up out of the Atlantic, for dear Lord. Putting the Bug Out Bag together, figured it was about time I replaced the ancient radio that had served me well through many a scary weather or power outage situation. I read several reviews from several websites, this Midland model ER-310 kept taking a top spot for a variety of reasons... ease of use, good signal reception, robust construction, decent size, built-in flashlight & dog call whistle, SOS flasher and so on and so on. I pulled the trigger on it and I couldn't be happier. THIS is a nice package. It's been able to pull in signals from stations my other home radios barely receive, so reception I would classify as very good. It IS easy to use, with simple button presses to access the most used & important features. I love the fact it's powered by both rechargeable battery through a micro USB connection, a hand crank OR solar power if things get real bleak...but it also can be run off of AA batteries if required with a flip of a switch... something I didn't know. Great. The internal Li-Ion 2600 mAh battery does get about 36 hours of power when used. I've combined and recharged it with an Anker model 347 40,000 mAh battery bank and finally stopped testing it after 5 continuous days with plenty of power left in reserve. Durability I wasn't willing to test by bouncing it off of rocks or having it rolling around in the back of a pickup bed, but it certainly looks and feels like it could take a fair amount of abuse, as some of the review articles have attested to. (They get paid to destroy things, I don't). I would say I feel like I'll get what I paid for out of this radio and am happy to include it in my emergency preparedness kit. Everyone asks me, do I need a hand crank radio for emergencies? The answer is always, yes. The next question is usually, which one should I get, and the answer to that is a rabbit hole that I usually avoid. My answer is simple now. 1. Get a radio that works on standard batteries and replaceable rechargeable batteries that can be hand cranked or charged via solar or USB power bank 2. Make sure it has WX alert on weather bands (not one you can just hear the weather continuously) This unit manages to support all of this. My other answer is to get a ham radio that has WX alert that you can charge or use a battery bank if you have to. This radio can be crank charged, charged via solar, and uses replaceable rechargeable batteries. You can also use AA batteries. You can tune into AM/FM radio stations, and NOAA weather channels (1-7 or by frequency). It has a light that can do SOS in morse code. And it has some ultrasonic dog whistle feature which doesn't work on mine (I have access to ultrasonic and subsonic audio detector and it picked up nothing above 20kHz and nothing under 20Hz. My tester can go all the way up to 100kHz, and I also have tested this Midland radio with trained animals (for search and rescue) to listen for ultrasonic audio between 20kHz all the way up to 100kHz, and the dogs did nothing. I have another device that generates 50-100kHz and the dogs went wild. So my ultrasonic dog whistle on this radio is defective. Oh well, most of you will not be able to test this feature as the testing equipment is in the many thousands of dollars, and access to dogs that are trained to hear these frequencies are not easy. And at the end of the day, I don't know if I will ever use this feature (maybe I should have bought the ER210 without the dog whistle feature.) At any rate, this is an awesome emergency radio, picks up stations very well, and the one thing I care about the most is NOAA weather alerts. The volume is loud enough and controlling the radio is as simple as can be. It seems rugged enough but I am not testing to see if I can really beat it up. The solar panel on top (takes a while to get a bit of radio time) and the crank works too (but takes a lot of cranking for it to power the radio for a very short time). I have also charged it using my battery bank and that works well. As for charging a phone with this? You can, but it's silly since this has a 2600mAh battery and you can drain that quickly charging an iPhone or Android device. I would use a dedicated power bank for that. But you absolutely can charge your phone with this. I bought a case for this which is also available on Amazon and it is a very nice case. In an emergency I would like to have this nearby, although it is a bit bulky for my emergency or go bag (my ham radio is less than a quarter of this size and it has WX alert). But if you have one in your car that you charge on a constant basis, this will be great to have on hand. You will still need a way to communicate, but that is what a cell phone (provided there is cell service) or a ham radio is for (especially a portable QRP radio that can do HF with minimal antenna like an EFHW or a long wire.) Last but not least, this is good to just have at home or in a remote location. At home, it would be better to have one that is plugged in that is topping off rechargeable batteries that back the radio when the power is out. Midland makes one that I would love to try one day that even has an alerting mechanism you can place under a pillow. So $70 for this radio is a bit expensive, especially with the defective ultrasonic dog whistle, and that is the only reason why I gave it 4 stars (the price and the defective whistle). For $60 this may be worth buying, or just get the ER210 for $50. It's a good radio so either this (ER310) or the ER210 will do. I hope this helps.

Well-made and highly functional emergency radio. Sound quality is pretty decent too, considering its size and intended function

We purchased this radio for use in our RV as we travel across country. Considered other units with S.A.M.E. code technology, but considering that we wouldn't always know the correct county codes to use during our travels, we decide on a radio with the standard warning alert function. It simply was hard to justify the additional cost for something we probably would not use. The unit is a little bigger than we wanted but the overall design, ease of use, and multiple power sources and functions more than make up for any short coming. Glad the digital display has 3 backlight options; OFF, ON, or on for 5 seconds. Helps eliminate any unnecessary light in our RV when we're trying to sleep yet makes radio easy to operate in the dark, when needed. PROS-- Very rugged case and antenna design Easy to operate Good reception Good size 2600 mAh rechargeable (and replaceable) lithium-ion battery that works great for charging our cell phones. CONS-- No S.A.M.E. Code Technology -- Knew this when purchasing the unit so it's not really a CON. Included this comment in the review for those who are considering this radio. If you want S.A.M.E. code capability, this is not the radio for you. Small AA/Li-ion Switch -- Midland must expect users to operate the unit on the rechargeable lithium-ion battery more than anything else. The switch used to switch the radio between the internal AA batteries and the lithium-ion battery (AA/Li-ion) is so small you almost have to use a pen to operate the switch. Tight Battery Fit -- very tight fit for the lithium-ion battery connector and the battery in the small compartment, but it works! PRODUCT IMPROVEMENT WISH LIST-- Radio station preset Ability to rechargeable lithium-ion battery from solar while operating on AA batteries. Maybe someone can correct me, but it doesn't appear that you can operate the unit on the AA batteries and charge the lithium-ion battery at the same time. Larger (AA/Li-ion) switch. The Midland ER-310 is a quality product. Recommend this for anyone looking for a solid radio with basic warning capabilities, good reception, good sound quality, ease of operation, and multiple power sources and with easy recharging. UPDATE - this update has nothing to do with the reliability of the product. The radio continues to operate perfectly. Great addition to the RV. The update is a rant about Amazon's pricing policies. Less than 36 hours after we purchased the radio the price dropped by almost $13. Amazon would not refund the difference or even offer an Amazon gift card. Keep in mind, the radio was purchased from Amazon LLC and distributed by Amazon. No other company involved, so a refund would have been simple and effective. We've been loyal customers since 1999 and Amazon Prime; made no difference. Just a terrible policy by Amazon!

we use this a lot for our dogs. We leave it on every time we leave. It's come in handy during the storms. Most definitely recommend.

Very impressed! After a tornado passed 5 miles from my house I took it as a wake up call to get better prepared. I have a hard held marine radio so I was able to listen to NOAA tracking the storm and I had cell service but no data so I had no idea what was going on outside from a news source. I highly recommend the Midland radio! They feel rugged, with 2 power sources, the rechargeable battery and 6 AAs, you’re going to have power, the radio works in my basement, I set it on my window sill and it started charging instantly, and this is HUGE, with the power out for 48 hours I didn’t have to separate myself from my phone while I took it out to my truck to charge. The sound quality is great. Easy instructions for set up. Super bright flashlight. Three was to charge it, 4 if you count replacing the AA batteries. If you’ve ever been in an emergency situation you can’t put a price on the peace of mind having this Emergency Radio. Worth every penny!!!

Produkt wirkt sehr durchdacht und ich denke im Notfall kann man sich wirklich darauf verlassen. Preis zwar relativ hoch ev. sinkt dieser aber falls es in Masse abgesetzt wird. Kaufen! Angeblich mit dem Besten Kurbel zu Strom Wirkungsgrad. Hatte zuvor ein anderes Produkt und bestätige, dass nur mehr die halbe Kurbelzeit notwendig ist. Eigentest 30 Minuten Kurbeln = 2% Akkuladung Smartphone (billig Produkt 60 Minuten notwendig)

good sturdy unit, charged an e-book well. Picked up distant AM radio stations (none are close by). Weather broadcasts were picked up. Light modes worked. Don't know if the dog whistle works (beyond human hearing) and we don't have a dog.

Es un gran radio de emergencias sin llegar a ser excelente, el plástico de la carcasa tiene un gran acabado y sin defectos, pero puede llegar a romperse al caerse sobre algo duro, yo pensé que la carcasa tendría un recubrimiento anti-impactos pero no lo tiene, puede utilizarse con 6 pilas AA no incluidas y/o una batería recargable ya incluida, se recarga por medio de energía solar y un dinamo, la pantalla digital y del panel solar pueden romperse o rallarse muy fácil, no es aprueba de agua, el volumen tiene 12 niveles de intensidad por lo que se puede escuchar bastante bajo o muy alto, tiene las dos bandas AM Y FM con una excelente recepción, aunque esta dependerá de la interferencia de la zona en la que se ubique el radio, creo que es un poco caro pero lo adquirí por la marca que lo fabrica, la lámpara es una gran ayuda en los apagones, en la ciudad de México se escucha el monitoreo volcánico y emergencias del gobierno de la CDMX.

We have only had this unit a couple of months, but it seems good. The radio gets good reception, and the crank does a good job charging. We are going to keep this in our grab bag, as opposed to using it everyday.
