The Crest of the Peacock: Non-European Roots of Mathematics - Third Edition

Math is much more than computation. Its history is the history of Humanity.
All humans use math, but Americans are often taught that math is ahistorical--that how math is taught and used is not influenced by human foibles and desires. The history of math is so much more than the Pythagorean Theorem--it is the history of humanity itself. Read this book to understand that the math we use everyday comes from cultures that we rarely study in American schools. More importantly, read this book to understand that Mathematics as a field is truly cross-cultural and rooted in history; it is a field that unites all human beings.

If you like math, this is an awesome book!
If you like math, get this book! The author includes historic math problems and solutions from a bunch of places, showing how similar problems have been approached from different vantage points. It's pretty cool. If history class had included real world discussions like this, I wouldn't have slept through it.

Intellectually Satisfying!
An erudite compilation of Eastern Mathematics that preceded much Western mathematics. Many mathematical discoveries attributed to the West were found to have existed, some time centuries earlier, in Eastern mathematical though and writings.

The whole book is better
I had to read selections from this book for a class. I found it so helpful I bought the book. This is a wonderful introduction to the development of modern math and a good guide to where it developed.

A Well researched and well written Book
One of the BEST unbiased study of roots of Mathematics. Very well written and understandable even by a non-mathematical person. The author has really taken the trouble. Worth reading and analysingThe colonial rationale to denigrate "Natives" no longer stands so the truth must be told. This is but the tip of an iceberg.
