Rome's Round Pie Iron with Steel and Wood Handles

So much fun to use. Great at campfires or barbeques. Yes, there is a slight learning curve on getting to know exactly how long to leave them in the fire and how well things cook. Don't get upset if this is your first time trying to use one. You might burn stuff in the beginning. Once you've mastered the technique, it's totally worth it. Hot sandwiches such as grilled cheese, caprise style sandwiches (aka pizza pockets), and ham and cheese are amazing. Crazy how good open flames make food taste! It's true the iron has to be treated to prevent future rust, but the procedure is relatively easy in my opinion. So far I haven't had any issues with my pie iron. I know some reviewers have said that their hinge broke, but I've been OK so far. It is cast iron so try not to abuse it by throwing it on the ground, letting it "clang" around when you're taking it place to place, or tossing it in the sink when it's time to clean it. I would recommend Rome's pie iron to every camper or kid at heart.

Great quality! They are thick and cook very evenly and are built to last. The kids have been asking to go camping more often just to use these.

I hadn't made mountain pies for years. The newer pie makers are all way too big. These are the correct size. The maker has to be smaller than the bread so the pie edges will seal the contents inside and the crust can be cut off. The old style makers were more clam shell shaped. This newer version is better because the pie filling can get right to the edge of the pastry.

So far we have been very pleased with these irons. I washed and seasoned them shortly after they arrived. This helped make them fairly non-stick but as with any cast iron it is not the same as Teflon and will need to be reseasoned periodically. The kids had a lot of fun holding these over the fire and cooking their own meals. We used them for omlets at breakfast time and found that you had to keep them level or the egg would drip out. There is an inter-locking lip on the edge but it is not tight enough to make it completely water tight. As other reviewers note the handles could also be improved. They are held in place by a set of roll pins. These came loose between uses and had to be pushed back in. The manufactuer should either use larger pins or consider using screws. Overall we were very pleased with these and they will become a regular part of our camping trips.

This works as advertised. I seasoned it twice as directed on the instructions using the home charcoal barbecue. I haven't tried it with any type of sweet filling but it makes great grilled cheese and grilled ham and cheese sandwiches. Just using standard white bread and trimming off the edges after closing it seals off the edges very nicely. Really looking forward to introducing it to the grandkids on our next camping trip. The quality appears to be excellent although I do wonder if the clip that holds the handles together will last. Just have to make sure to squeeze the handles together before engaging the clip to not put too much pressure on it. It cleans up very easily. I though I read in the advertisement that it was made in the USA but it isn't, it is from China.

It’s a great product—but there’s a complete deal breaker if you live in an urban area!! You need a campfire to season the thing right from the get-go!!!! There’s apparently no way around this. What a disappointment. We had one of these when I was a kid that we got from a thrift store, and I looked forward to making delicious grilled sandwiches from my youth. It’s well made. Back it goes.

This did exactly what I hoped it would do: let me make quick and easy pies for my small children, adding a dose of fun to an overnight camping outing. The pie iron was extraordinarily easy to use. Just butter bread on both sides, fill, cook for 90 seconds on a side over hot coals, dump out the pie on a plate, cool, and eat. The results were better, and tastier than I thought. First pie was a success, and so was the second, third, fourth and so on. Two obvious caveats: this extremely hot cast iron cooking utensil is not safe for small children to handle directly, and should be used with care. That said, it had fellow campers peppering me with questions, and turned out great little pies that I think will give my kids a very happy memory. I look forward to using them on my next outing.

Slightly smaller than the square version, this is a solid cast-iron pie iron. Since it’s smaller than a standard slice of bread, it seals the bread around the sandwich filling. It’s the perfect size for kids, or for making a smaller snack sandwich.

Nach langer Überlegung habe ich mich entschlossen dieses Pie Iron zu bestellen. Ich wollte ein rundes, da ich es witzig finde auch mal runde Sandwiches zu machen. Aber Leute aufgepasst das Teil ist WINZIG! Der Innendurchmesser der beiden Hälften hat gerade mal 9,5cm am oberen Rand, nach unten verjüngt es sich bis auf knapp 9cm. Meine Sandwich Toastscheiben sind 11 x 11cm. Aus der Beschreibung oben, ist das nicht ersichtlich! Es kommt allerdings mit Rezepten. Die Qualität scheint gut zu sein. Ich werde es nicht testen sondern so wieder zurück schicken

Es ligeramente complicado cuando se usa en la cocina y no en el campamento con fuego vivo. Pero funciona. Hay que aprender
