Coaching Positional Play - ''Expansive Football'' Attacking Tactics & Practices

Really useful book, clearly organized and nicely presented, and full of both excellent explanations of theoretical points and practical ideas for how to train and teach them. Some other reviews have said that this is a high-level book for fairly advanced coaches. I think that's probably true, in a certain sense. Many of the ideas and suggestions are indeed too advanced for younger kids. But I would recommend this book to beginning coaches as well. If they (beginning coaches) don't have a (correct) vision of where they want their kids to end up 5 years down the line or whatever, they end up doing a tremendous amount of damage by guiding kids in wrong directions and teaching them things that will have to be unlearned later. This book, more than any other I've encountered (and I've read a lot and even written one) provides a clear, coherent, systematic vision of what, say, 8th or 9th graders should understand and how they should play if they're serious about soccer. Help more of them get there by studying this book when you volunteer to coach your 8 or 9 year old. You'll be doing yourself, and your kids, and perhaps the future of US soccer, a big favor.

If you already have many soccer books, coach soccer and want to go to the next level, this is a good book for you. After developing a solid feel for technical training, conditioning, basic team formation, defending tactics, attacking patterns, you will eventually need to grow into higher team level play, simultaneously teaching every player and the team as a whole and where to be and why in every situation {attacking from the back, getting out of the back under pressure, controlled possession through the midfield, overloads in the attacking phase and areas, signals for every player to understand shape}, this is a good book to summarize these ideas. The bonus is sections on how to implement the training program, how to schedule the program and good notes on the basis for all of the above. Had I got this book in my first year of youth soccer with U6-8 boys it would have not helped much, but now after 20+ years or playing and coaching through U17 boys, this is perhaps my favorite resource (from about 50 books on various subject and a lot of "drills" books) as a summary, this is my new soccer coaching "Bible". I wish I had this book 10 years ago, it would hav saved me a lot of time trying to develop the same "system" and way of thinking. Now after digesting this book, watching teams like Barcelona and Man City, I see so much more going on and the patterns on the field, which is what we need to paint the proper picture for our developing players. I consider this a must have for serious developing coaches.

Very good book. Very detail on the methodology of “Expensive fútbol “. Which they included better activities ( drills ). Over all it was a fun read.

Loved the simple explanations session plan drills and the way the book looks to take yiu through the different phases of play and moments of the game preparing your team training sessions throughout the season - great book

Methodology is explained well with many examples and different training sessions. I have used it for the under 15yrs boys team and it works.

Das Cover und der Titel klingen sehr vielversprechend. Dass der Autor bislang nicht bei großen Klubs gearbeitet hat, ist nicht erforderlich - Fußballfachwissen innerhalb dieses Themas jedoch schon.So sind bestimmte Punkte des Buches rein inhaltlich falsch (Bayern stand 2012 m Champions League Finale und nicht der FC Barcelona) - und rein taktisch betrachtet: Ausgehend vom Mittelfeld-Pressing sind in der eigenen Spielhälfte alle möglichen Passmuster denkbar. Spannend wird es ja immer, wenn Druck entsteht. Dafür bietet das Buch erschreckend wenige Ansätze.Immerhin sind zum Teil recht ordentliche Trainingsformen existent.
