Are the pencils ready sharpened?

Yes, and they sharpen up again well after blunting.

Are these made in China? is that what ' factories in the Far East' means?

I am not 100% if this particulr item is made in China as such but as most goods these days are made there most probably is the case.

Do erasers actually work?

The eraser is designed to eraser pencil only.

In the HB grade, is it 1hb 2hb 3hb etc all the way to 12hb (which hb are in each one)

If I remember rightly from my days in stationery harder lead is numbered as H numbers and softer as B numbers. HB is medium and most popular. I like a fairly soft for crosswords etc. so buy 2B
