โLike a woman, this book gets better with age. Greerโs punchy prose and all-too-true observations motivate you to go out and do something to liberate yourself-and other women.โ โ Leora Tanenbaum, author of Slut! Growing Up Female with a Bad Reputation A ground-breaking, worldwide bestselling study of womenโs oppression that is at once an important social commentary, a passionately argued masterpiece of polemic, and a feminist classic. The publication of Germaine Greerโs The Female Eunuch in 1970 was a landmark event, raising eyebrows and ire while creating a shock wave of recognition in women around the world with its steadfast assertion that sexual liberation is the key to women's liberation. Today, Greer's searing examination of the oppression of women in contemporary society is both an important historical record of where we've been and a shockingly relevant treatise on what still remains to be achieved. Review: Clarity in truth - Everyone should read this book -- in their late teens if they're lucky, but hopefully before thirty when the mundane tends to start to get in the way of what the Russians call 'inakomyslyashchie' ('different thinking' or 'dissidence'). Greer's searing indictment of misogyny as a political, economic and cultural norm has lost none of its power, since its original publication in 1970. If anything, in the post-feminist era her observations are all the more poignant, her arguments all the more powerful. Apart from the intensity of the writing, the prose is delightful. Truth hurts, but the pain of reading Greer is erased by the pleasure of the text. Review: Germaine still Germain. - Of all the feminists I've read, and they are numerous, Greer is still significant in her observations. Bolder than most, making it easier for those following her to offer their insights, if less trenchantly. Great read!

Classic
One of many older feminist classics. This book is a lot more aligned with modern radical feminism than where the mainstream has gone. Which is exactly why I suggest younger feminist read it. You may not like everything Greer has to say- but I gained a lot from it as a feminist thinker, and on a surprisingly personal level. It's extremely witty and I think many women would enjoy reading through it just to hear someone voice the not-so-polite things they think about men, society, other women, etc etc. As an older book it can't do much to address the internal politics of the current movement. But that's a good thing. It's not about this advertisement or that blog scandal. It's about feminism and female sexuality. I actually bought it more in an attempt to understand my personal sexual struggles than to educate myself about feminism- and the book is more about feminism than my personal sexual struggles. Yet both educational paths were fulfilled quite nicely.

Historical reminder of our mothers choices
The book is very much a journey to another time, although sadly much of it still echoes in modern times. Greer is a good writer and manages to introduce both her own and the prevailing philosophies of the era in her book. A must read for all of us if only to humbly consider that despite all that has passed we still have a long, long ways to go.

MUST READ
I bought this so my son would read it but was disappointed in the quality of the publication. Very poor quality paper, smudgy print and why oh why have they changed the original fabulous cover design.

Total ambivalence and confusion
I had to read this book for a college class. Honestly, Germaine needs authentic therapy. My heart goes out to someone who thinks this way- she believes all men hate women and then will describe how women hate her and the kind of men she has been with. Her emotions are so out of touch with human relationships. Iโm sure her past has affected her in such a way that she canโt emotionally ever bond with others. Thereโs a kindness the filters through all her confusion- I pray she finds life in the only person that can really give it to her- hope has a name- love has a name - joy has a name - Jesus

Educating the next Generation
I ordered this and The Feminine Mistique for my daughter because she kept askig me what all the brouhaha was about - geesh! Like my example was not enough! So I decided she needed the contextual conversation - this was one of my favorite/hated books when it came out: I kept throwing it against the wall because what it said was true enough to infuriate me, then picking it up and reading more- repeat several times!! HA. Loved this edition because it was the original and she said part of the pleasure of receiving it was the "historical smell" of enduring truth! I did good - thanks to the Amazon merchant!

Superb
Read this many years ago and was very happy to be able to read it again now. She said what a lot of women were thinking, and then thought that they were crazy for thinking it.

Still reading this. It's taken me seventy three years ...
Still reading this. It's taken me seventy three years to be ready for it. I am just eating it up. I realise it's only relevant to Germaine Greer. I actually tried working with her view of what a man woman relationship should be, and remembered it has to be what i am experiencing, not what someone else understands. I really appreciate the way she sees the way we are all conditioned to fit into a social pattern based on Fear. So there is hope! particularly once we realise that we are frightened of being Free.
