Can you tell me what type of wood it is made from?

I would say it is a soft wood like a pine but with the size of the panels and the qty of panels really makes it pretty durable what i like about it is the unique carving which you would no doubt pay at least $400 at World Market or Pier 1

Are there any additional supports needed? Say on carpet? How wide is it with the bends needed for standing?

I only use it as a headboard for a king size bed supported against a wall. It is not a flimsy piece but solid wood. I think with the least amount of bends you could cover about 70 to 72 inches of space and be sturdy. A larger angle obviously would make it even sturdier but cover less area.

is this screen opaque or can you see through it?

It is not opaque, you can see through it if you're trying to. It has a beautiful design, however, and is substantially made, so it is a good "divider".
