What are the basics needed to grow Peonies? Little or lots of sunlight? How much watering? Best season to plant?

Good soil full sun to part shade. We live in Utah so the climate here is good. I have seen larger of peonies, but the starts were very small and we only had one live to this year. The one looks great this year. I planted in the spring just after I purchased them. If you have a local nursery you my havebetter luck with their plants, the roots were very small.

Can these be grown in a wood barrel vs the ground

We would recommend planting these directly in the ground.

Will Peonies thrive in Southern California?

I don't think so but I don't live in California. Mine didn't survive in the state of ohio.
