Q: Is this feeder good to stop rats getting at the fat balls?

I don't know about rats it certainly keeps out the squirrel but rats are a lot smaller

Q: What is the measurement between the outside and inner where the fat balls are placed please, can the starlings still reach the fatballs

Hi Judy - I've just measured the distance between the outside and the inside - it's 3" - apx. 8cm. I must add that even after leaving it outside and filled for months - the birds, large and small, refuse to have anything to do with it. Perhaps you'll have better luck.

Q: Can Robins get through the outer cage ?

Yes they can, the gaps look small but garden birds are even small - I was surprised. We’ve had Robins, bluetits, sparrows, finches and even a blackcap. Would highly recommend and has completely deterred the squirrels.

Q: Our birds either don’t seem interested (food may still be plentiful) or they can’t see the fat balls inside? Anyone had similar experiences?

The small birds were cautious of the cage for a couple of days and only the really brave ones would explore inside, but after that they pop in and out without hesitation. I've had one starling squeeze inside which gave me a scare as it seemed to struggle for a while to get itself out again. Mostly the starlings don't bother with it so far.
