So Smooth
So let me preface this with what we were using before. An old Motorola cable modem from like six years ago and an Apple Airport Express that's even older. I am not, by any means an IT pro, but I have picked up a lot from troubleshooting basic stuff and learning from various friends in the field. Take the following with that in mind.So far we've had this baby running for a little over a month with no issues. The slim design is a real bonus as my desk is already at capacity with a full-tower case, two monitors, full size keyboard and printer on it. The signal is surprisingly strong. We live in a one bedroom on the third floor and I get wireless signal about a half city block away from home via my cell phone. We have something like 10 devices connected via wifi and there has yet to be any issues with it. I may have messed up something in the setup, but currently my wired PC gets considerable lag when my wireless PS3 is streaming movies. nothing major, but Skype calls get distorted from time to time.Speaking of setup, talk about a breeze! The UI is kinda ugly, but the instructions are simple enough to follow for the basics. I can see where a lot of the features would come in handy, but personally I didn't need them, I just wanted a reliable product and most of my IT friends said Buffalo was the way to go. So far, with intense gaming sessions, livestreaming, and general home use it holds up great!

Great router. Easy setup
THis was my first experience with Buffalo and I am very happy. It came pre-programmed with a network name and password on the side. There is a weird space in the password that will stump you though. Weird Buffalo.Anyways its nice looking and has external antennas. The range is superb and its very fast. Its been running live for 6 months and never needed a reboot. Thats more than I can say for any Linksys or Netgeat I've owned. I wouldn't hesitate to get another one of these in the future.

DD-WRT is the selling point
Buying this router comes down to if you want DD-WRT pre-installed or not. DD-WRT is an opensource wireless firmware that is amazingly reliable, fast, and feature packed. Hard core tech people will almost all take any router they buy and install DD-WRT on it, a procedure not for the feint of heart. This router comes pre-installed with DD-WRT, allowing hard core tech people to save themselves time and ensure device compatibility. It also allows non tech people to benefit from the features and stability without having to be techies themselves.I've used this router for awhile now and the latency is low, transmission distance is high, it has never slowed down, never crashed, never misbehaved in any way. It quite simply does its job and does it well. This sounds so simple but I've used a lot of routers over the years that are unreliable and cause me grief.Save yourself grief, buy this router.

Garbage all around - NO OPEN VPN!
So you advertise your router does VPN and has DD-wrt but fail to mention it only support the crapiest VPN PPTP and nothing else that DDWRT actually supports. Even more pathetically they failed to take out the openVPN quick help instructions that show up on the right side of the vpn page despite removing openvpn support. You'll also note that the URL for the "vpn" page is actually /pptp.aspAlso missing many great features that a normal dd-wrt build has such as being able to pick from connected clients to assign static IP. Not only does it not let you pick from a list and require you to type it in but static leasing doesn't even work. Also Buffalo has made it nearly impossible to flash a reall DDwrt onto the router. I have flashed dd-wrt onto numerous routers and the instructions for doing buffalo routes like this, which encrypts their firmware, require you to flash it at this precise time during startup (btw this router has a very slow reboot) and despite 30 tries I was never able to do it.The auto upgrade frimware feature also doesnt work and errors out trying to check if newer version is available. This is router is absolute garbage and isnt even better than my crappy comcast modem gateway combo. I now despise buffalo for wasting my time and blatantly false advertising.

Reasonable value
This was a replacement router for a Netgear N300 which developed intermittent drop outs after about three months of use..It is early days but so far this unit seems to work OK. The signal strength is better than the Netgear providing the antennas are carefully adjusted ( 100% or a little less over about 25 metres and through two external and one internal wall). I have had one unexplained need to reboot but otherwise the Buffalo has been essentially invisible as it should be.

The product simply didn't work for the intended application
I bought this product because it had DD-WRT preloaded and I wanted to use HideMyAss VPN which one can load on to a router running DD-WRT. After about three weeks of trying myself ( my computer experience goes all the way back to punched card programming of Fortran and Algol on IBM mainframes so I don't think of myself as a novice when it comes to computers and networking) and using all the tech resources available on the internet and working with HMA tech support we all gave up on this product. I tried for so long because I enjoy a technical challenge and was determined to find the problem and make it work. But in the end I was defeated. I discovered along the way that Buffalo routers are buggy and definitely not the router of choice for anyone thinking of loading a VPN package on their router. I am currently participating in the Unlocator Beta trial and so far it works as I want it to without me having to buy a replacement router!
