Terrific for the money!
Update: 5/15/20 - After using this phone for a year, I have raised my overall rating to 5 stars!! This is not a fancy phone, but it gets the job done well at a very low cost. Mount it correctly and you will have a great phone with lots of features, a display that you can easily read from 6 feet away, and sound quality that is excellent. All I really needed was a caller ID display on a phone in my shop. We get about 8 or 10 robo calls a day, and I just wanted to be able to screen calls without running to another room to see a caller ID. This phone is great for that. The display is clear and the quality of the audio is pretty good. I would have given the phone 5 stars, but the quality of the audio on the speaker phone is not good. Yes, you can tell what someone is saying, but the speakerphone audio quality is poor. If the quality was better, this would have been a 5-star review, but then this would likely have been a $60 to $100 phone. This phone was what I needed. Update 3/3/19: I forgot to mention that the phone mounts very well on a wall. It has the standard two pin spacing slots on the rear for a wall plate. If you look at the side view photos submitted by people that say the phone does not wall mount, you can see that they are using only one of the two available mounting slots. If the instructions are followed, there is no problem using a wall mount.

Solid, inexpensive phone with hearing and vision enhancements
My wife and I own three AT&T desk phones like this one... the model shown here, the white version here: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B007B5VH0E and the older version here: http://www.amazon.com/AT-CL2939-Corded-Phone-Handset/dp/B002L3XJ3Y. They are all excellent phones for the price. Let's get the obvious things out of the way first. No, this phone is not backlit. If you want backlighting on the display, you want the white model: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B007B5VH0E. The white model also has a digital answering machine (no tapes needed), which the black model does not have. Also, some users have complained about the speakerphone. Let's be clear: the speakerphone is for people with perfect hearing, and it always was. Speakerphones, in general, are not designed for hearing-impaired folks; you would need the equivalent of a megaphone. For people with normal hearing, the speakerphone works just fine. For people with impaired hearing, like my wife, the handset has clear, bold sound, and you can increase the volume further with the Audio Assist button (although my wife seldom needs the Audio Assist, despite having moderately-high hearing loss). The very capable sound in the handset, combined with the large buttons, make it an excellent choice for those that are farsighted (like I am), and/or those with moderate to relatively high hearing loss. The ringer is fairly loud at its highest setting; I use the lowest setting in my office. We also like the call log, and the fact that you get a visual indication when someone else is using the phone line. I chose this phone for my office because I liked the older black model, but I also liked the features on the white phone we got for the kitchen. With the exception of the backlit display and the answering machine, both phones are identical. To accomodate the backlit display and answering machine, the white model has a power adapter, whereas the black model uses two AA batteries (they are not proprietary batteries, despite the Amazon description) to power the Caller ID, which I expect to last for at least a couple of years before they need replacing (based on my experience with the older model). All in all, this phone delivers value substantially beyond its $30 price tag.

My Favorite Phone
If you're looking to buy a good land line telephone, like the ones we had back in the day, you don't need me to tell you it's like looking for a needle in a haystack. No one seems to carry them anymore. I looked just about everywhere: Staples, Best Buy, Costco, BJ's, PC Richard.... you name it, I looked there too, all to no avail. It's as if they've gone extinct like the dinosaurs. When I came across this AT&T phone on AMAZON, it was like hitting LOTTO. I hurried and bought one for my home office and I couldn't be more happy with it. It looks great on my desk, and the features are not complicated. In other words, I didn't have to ask a child to explain to me, how to use them.

Display is not backlit. Okay for the price.
Not a bad phone for the money, but you should know the large display is not back-lit so it is next to useless in a darker room. Additionally, the speaker quality is not great.

Current production of this phone has a generic problem
I have had one of these for several years and it works fine. I recently bought another for a different room in my home and discovered that its internal clock function loses time, many minutes per day. Figuring that it was a defect in my new purchase, I returned the phone, requesting a replacement. The replacement behaved the same way! Then, I saw what was happening: With each incoming call, the phone's clock display would lose a minute. The more calls that came in, the more it would lose. This is clearly a design defect. Doesn't the factory test their embedded firmware changes before they release them to the field? My older copy of this phone works fine. Don't buy this phone until the factory corrects this design problem. Too bad that there's no way to know when that will occur. I am returning the replacement for my recent purchase and will choose an alternative phone. C'mon AT&T, you can do better than this. Update: I purchased a similar phone, an RCA model 1113. The RCA phone has a built-in clock function, but no means for the user to set the date/time. With incoming calls, the RCA sets its date/time with data sent as part of the incoming call's caller ID information - there's no user interaction with this. Apparently, my local provider (Cox, via VoIP) has their network clock mis-adjusted, 11 minutes slow, as displayed on the RCA phone. It could be (this is speculation) that the AT&T phones were incrementally adjusting themselves to this incorrect network clock reference. I didn't keep my recent AT&T phones (original and replacement) long enough to determine whether they would cease to lose time once they aligned themselves with this incorrect network reference, but it could very well be the case. If new phones use this mechanism, their instructions should include a description of this process, and a disclaimer that if the network clock is wrong, the phone will display the incorrect time. This feature is apparently supposed to be clever, but there can be unintended consequences.

Buen teléfono fijo a bajo costo
Muy buen teléfono, gran display para ver los números, buen sonido y varias funciones, gran opción para una oficina y se ve mucho mejor que los que venden en los súper mercados o en tiendas de electro una a un precio muy accesible

DISAPPOINTMENT
This seemed exactly the product I had been looking for: corded, big caller display and attractive. The first thing I discovered was that the caller display was so pale that I had difficulty reading it, even with glasses on. I was so frustrated that I phoned the US but the more they explained, the more I realised that the UK system was the difference. The next thing I noticed was that my callers needed to put me on speaking phone to hear me. And finally one day there was a loud buzzing noise and it packed up altogether. Very disappointed. Hopeless in the UK.

Excellent Land-line Phone
This is an excellent land-line phone. I've been using the same model as a desk phone for over a year, and just purchased another to have as our kitchen wall phone. Both are working perfectly. This model is easy to use and doesn't need to be plugged into an electrical plug since it's battery powered. While the display is not backlit, the screen contrast is adjustable making it relatively easy to read in glare-free normal lighting.
