Amazing book! A must read for all the Beatles and especially John lennon Fans out there!

John Lennon was my hero of 60’s pop/ rock and I’ve read a lot about his life so I didn’t learn much but found most of what I read to be accurate with some stories about things he did I had never known. Recommended if you love the Beatles like me , but then I am in my fifties now

This is the definitive masterwork on the life of John Lennon. It’s beautifully written, by one of John’s old friends Ray Connolly. Ray gets to the heart of who John was as a person and doesn’t get starry-eyed over his old friend. Ray’s reputation for painstaking research is well founded - as is his refutation for making the journey wonderfully entertaining for the reader. Brilliant stuff.

ペーパーバック版を買ったのですが、字が小さくて読みづらいの何のって・・・Kindle版にすれば良かったかなと少し後悔。あと、この本はもし10年前だったらいくら洋書好きな私でも頓挫してたかも、と思えるくらい凝った言い回しが多くて参った。400ページちょっとの本ですが文字が小さいことと複雑な英文のおかげで600ページくらいに感じた。じゃ、面白くなかったのか？というとそういうわけではなくビートルズと同世代で面識もある筆者ならではの当時のオフレコ話のようなものもありジョン・レノンの人間くささというか愛すべきバカ野郎な話が満載。この筆者はあからさまではないけど好きな人物と嫌いな人物がはっきりしてるようで、ポール・マッカトニーやジョンの前妻シンシアなどにはとても好意的ですが、オノヨーコに対してはあまり良い感情を持って無さそう。オノヨーコに好印象の欧米のライターはほとんどいませんが。前妻シンシアが書いた内容と被る箇所が結構多いのですが、シンシアがミミおばさんに対して否定的なのに対しこの著者はミミおばさんは心の奥底では深くジョンを愛し信頼もしていた、という書き方。あとやたらポールを良く書いてるのが引っかかる。ポールに気を遣ってるっつうか、忖度してる？何しろSirだからサー。欠点の多い歪んだ性格も描かれておりジョンをヒーローではなく愛すべきバカ野郎としてとらえる1冊。先に出ているPhillip Normanのほうも読んで比べてみたいと思います。
